Hey folks, I just wanted to post here about a project I’m working on, looking at all the other really cool stuff here, kinda shy to post it here, but thought I’d give it a go

Basically, for many years I have been stuck in a ‘cool idea : do some code : get tired/bored/unmotivated’ loop. So many ideas, and not a single complete game to show for it. So, in order to try and break this loop, I’ve decided I am going to be totally open about what I’m doing. Previously its always been “ah I won’t tell anyone about project X, that way if I fail doing it, no one will judge me”. Now I am taking the complete opposite attitude - telling everyone! :). I’ve set myself 19 hours to build a complete game (up to hour 12 so far), I’ve chosen Unity as the platform I will be developing on. I’m blogging every hour I am working ( currently doing an hour a night and plan to do four hours on saturday to complete my time ).

the blog is located at : http://blog.greenslimegames.com/ and you can read a much longer ( warning: wall o’ text  ) post about why I am doing this here : http://blog.greenslimegames.com/2010/09/21/every-story-has-a-beginning/. The blog has plenty of videos showing the progress of the project and also a link to my twitter feed.

Please feel free to have a look at the above and feel even more free to leave some feedback or socially bookmark me or follow me or subscribe to me  It’s a bit sad doing this for nothing but webcrawlers.

Any advice or just feedback would be awesome!

Thanks for taking the time to read my little thread

Looking good mate

I think you’ve got the right idea setting yourself a little challenge to make sure you stick with it. It is definitely way too tempting to jump from idea to idea sometimes!

Look forward to seeing the finished product.

Thanks for the reply  Very much thinking that setting this challenge to be public about everything I do, and giving myself a strict time limit has been a fantastic idea. Finding myself much more focused when I sit down to code as well. I’ve just done hour 13, and blogged about it here : Hour 13 – annoying bug gone! « GreenSlimeGames just waiting for the youtube vid to upload now

D’oh! it took ages to upload the YouTube video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mawDLLEDruQ&feature=player_embedded

Hour 14 completed

Any feedback on which zoomed out view is better is greatfully accepted  the greenish screen or the realisitic view screen.

Ha, that’s a really interesting read, and enjoying your videos too! Will keep tabs on this, nice one!

I really liked this, and echoing the above, liked the video too. Good stuff indeed.

Keep it up as I have made a note to keep coming back to check progress.

Thanks both of you! Feedback is most definately a great motivator. I’ve just done Hour 15, and will be doing Hour 16 later tonight :

And hour 16 has finally managed to work itself to YouTube :

Blog entry :

Tomorrow I am planning on three hour sessions to finish it, i.e. get it to a a point I can stick it in a web player and let people play it. So if anyone has any feedback, feel free to get in contact and let me know ( sooner rather than later, hehe) Checking back here this tommorrow, and hopefully there will be a link to a fully working game

Hour 17 now complete, It feels VERY much more like a game, amazingly happy - though it is just a very simple game, its the first time I’ve got this close to finishing one!

Hour 18 done, one more hour to go

Hour 19 done, and yay, I have a complete game  Still kinda pants, but I think its a damn good start, requesting feedback

Won’t bother linking to the blog, just wrote something quickly as I’m pretty tired  But the one you have all be waiting for :

WebPlayer : http://www.greenslimegames.com/games/spaceoreminer/

Enjoy!

That was quite an interesting game. I got 2035. Surprisingly I found myself playing for a little while. It was quite fun and I’m sure you can keep expanding on the game. Maybe add enemies that want to steal your ore? Maybe there is a boss enemy that restores your fuel and energy when you kill him? Just a few quick ideas. Nice job.

Well done, that was great to watch your progress, do another one!!

Ah awesome, thanks for the feedback  I’ve added some screenies to the first post, hopefully that will get some feedback  Definately a case of it being a simple prototype but very glad it was enjoyed. I’ll think about adding enemies - personally I just enjoying the mining without a threat, but I suppose you could always be able to turn them on/off. Hmm I could have them attack the Limar, aaaah, now theres an idea  Again, its just a case of getting feedback and see what people think

As for extra fuel and energy, very much agree they are limiting factors in the game. One of the first changes I will be adding to the project is a shop, which will allow you to upgrade your laser and rockets - think that is very much a good plan. I’m also toying around with the idea of some persitant stats - Total ore mined per user/Mole deaths/games played/money earnt, etc; like the real time stats screen but extended and customised. But in order to do that, people would have to register/login with the game, technically thats no problem ( pretty dang fluent in web frontends and db stuff ) , but I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with implenting this type of feature - I was thinking implement a guest mode, and a logged in mode - any hints/tips on this?

Also, considering the format I have developed this in ( meaning the 19 hour challenge ) I’m wondering where I should go now with it. As the game is getting more complex, I’m not sure I will be able to complete additional functionality within an hour timeframe, and having a “hour 20 : I’ve got three pages full of code, but it doesn’t work, so watch me draw something in gimp instead” YouTube vid, seems a bit pointless

Hmmm, I type too much  anyway, thanks for the kind words  and anyone who hasn’t given it a go, please do, and please make sure you get to the game over screen, that way I can build up more stats about how people are interacting with the game … if you get bored just keep holding down space and wait for your fuel to expire!

Hey,

I played the game and loved it! Great idea! I loved the game over screen  .

Thanks for the reply! glad you enjoyed it  wasn’t sure people would like the gameover screen or be offended by it

New and Improved stats screen, this time, with graphs!

http://www.greenslimegames.com/games/spaceoreminer/

No idea is anyone actually reads this far down on a self bumped thread  I’ve added a shop, and done some small gameplay tweaks. There is also a pretty sweet log in system, which is a quite major component in where I want to go with this game.

You can find the blog post about it here : Update 1 : SpaceOreMiner turns into an MMORPG « GreenSlimeGames
You can see the youtube about it here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8aiYX9Sa7Y

And most important, play a game here : http://www.greenslimegames.com/games/spaceoreminer

To create an account, just type in a user name and password. To make money from the ore you mine, return to the giant ship thing, and enter the purple sphere. To enter the shop, you need to land on the landing pad just above the purple sphere. The blog has a little diagram

Nice update I love the shop. However I came across a bug that stopped me from playing it sadly. I bought the first upgrade for my laser and the laser would always point up to the landing pad. Then i managed to make it break away and it would no longer destroy the terrain. Good job keep up the good work. I’m following this game.

Thanks for the feedback! I’ve just released a new patch - 1.3 that fixes this bug and adds some more stuff to the game  If this bug appears again, please feel free to get in contact with me and I will see if I can beat it again  Have fun and enjoy the game!
