I just DL’d Unity, iPhone SDK, etc. today and applied for the Apple Dev Program. I am reading some very disappointing news… I can’t build for my iPhone with being accepted into the ADP. Is this true. Someone here said 6 weeks - Does it really take that long?
If so, did I just waste $600 that I could have used over the next 6 weeks while I wait for apple? I am leary to even start working on my game in Unity without the ability to test on my iPhone. Because of the limited hardware and screen it seams like performance and graphics testing needs to happen right up front.
Any suggestions or clarification would be greatly appreciated.
To develop for the iPhone and put anything on it, you will need to be approved by Apple. As for how long that takes – it didn’t take nearly 6 weeks for me to get approved.
I agree that developing an Application in Unity for the iPhone without an iPhone is going to be a guessing game and most likely a waste of time. That said, if you haven’t used Unity before, you probably have a week or two to go through the tutorials and do some test projects to get familiar with the API, ShaderLab, etc. Even if you have a serious background in game development, I don’t think that spending time getting up to speed with the tools that you are going to be using should ever be considered a total waste of time.
Getting approved as company can take a while, i heard everything ranging from 3 to 8 weeks. If you apply as individual it can go way quicker though, seems to be usually in 1-2 days.
If you don’t mind spending an additional $99 then you could apply for the individual license too…(mine was approved in about 12 hours) and use it until you company license is approved. My company is applying for a license also and they got their e-mail to fax over all the company documents within only about 48 hours)…still waiting on what happens now after that.
Charles - I think you are right. I think that I have a very good understanding of the basics from using maya and programming my games in object oriented actionscript but Unity “process” is all new to me. 6 weeks will kill my hopes and dreams ; )
tommosaur digitalshow - Yeah, that might be the way to go. I thought I was going to have to pay $99 either way.
Hi,
sorry to hijack this thread but may I ask one question (I´m new to all that stuff, too):
I have applied for the individual license (which was available to me within some hours). Is it of any advantage to apply as a company in addition to that? (From the legal point of view I wouldn´t need a company license but does it help to get a more “professional” look to the enduser (buyer of my games))?
You can still put whatever name you want when you upload your app. You can put your own name or a company name. So to the user, they will never know that you are an individual, unless you put your name down. I usually put my name down under the copyright, but use my website domain as my company name.
The only advantage you get with the company license (from what I can tell), is that in the portal, you can create additional sub accounts for other developers to manage profiles and devices. If it’s just you as a solo developer, this isn’t going to do anything for you. If you have a team that you are working with, it still probably won’t be much of a benefit, because you can just have 1 person manage all the profiles.
Thanks kevinr. I was under the impression that I had to apply as a company if I wanted to use my company name, so thats why I did it. I will just talk to Apple when they call and see what they suggest.
It’s true that you can put whatever name you want in the Copyright field (when submitting a New Application in iTunes Connect) but there is no way to change the Company Name. For instance in this screenshot “randy edmonds” is the company name (the seller) and I can not change that because it is how I signed up for the iPhone Dev Program. However I can change the copyright section, I use my company’s name there; “Iterations Software”.
I WISH THERE WAS A WAY to change the company name… I didn’t even use capitalization in my name!!
I have to say, Apple in this instance, doesn’t really make things very self explanatory or easy to understand. Once I filled everything out it just says someone will contact you. No time frame, nothing. It also doesn’t explain why you want to do it as a company vs. personal. Its like they are being intentionally mysterious because they are sooo cool : )
The good thing is that all stuff that apple borks on the name etc in the profile can be altered yourself with a little time.
just create a new certificate (as explained in how to), revoke the current profile and generate a new one.
takes 10mins and works.
I asked the support before on how to resolve a problem with √§ in my surename, but didn’t get an answer other than the automatic “we will look into it” for weeks.
Perhaps they point that out somewhere, but as single user subscription, the majority of the how to don’t hold until you revoke your current cert
