Newsflash: Ex-Virtools user prefers Unity

Just a quick note on a review of Unity I posted over at the Virtools forums. I used Virtools for a long time before seeing the light and using Unity.

I was asked by some of the virtools users to post some notes of what I found and thought to let you guys here know a little of what it’s like on the other side of the (non-Unity) fence.

A happy Unity user,

joe

Great read. I’m happy to see more word getting out there. Congrats on the (significant) switch!

Grats on the switch.

It’s amazing what VT users have to put up with nowadays: paying so much money and getting so little in return from the makers. Especially if you see what’s new in VT4 (what a rip-off) and you’ve seen the endless wish lists and good suggestions.

I think the only thing I kinda miss from VT is the profiler. Great to see what’s causing a drop in fps.
But then again, I’m sure a tool like that will be implemented in Unity sooner or later.

I agree the profiler is very cool. (especially if a script is not working the way you want it to!)

Like you, I’m sure we’ll see something like that for Unity in due course.

There are quite a few things in virtools which would be great to have in unity (the particle engine, the performance profiler, some gui stuff, some certain building blocks, ide availability on windows, console support, good old robust havok, …).

It certainly depends on what you want exactly but in the end much much more is on unity’s side. You don’t even have to count in all the aspects either. Just the still buggy webplayer, way too expensive pricing and the whole licence issues, no crossplatform publishing are a nogo for virtools. Game education institutes here are turning away from them and also when they had their chance to get some sw3d users on board they completely fucked it up for most of them.
