If this is true, Apple win - the end. It effectively means that the iPhone has become a games console which sells cheaper than reduced Wiiās, with thousands of cheap, fun games, easily accessible from your arm-chair.
World changing, and thatās not an overstatement.
Looks pretty cool. Iām not suprised at all though. Some how I had a feeling that apple would relaunch a smaller version of one of their old products.
Is a device that is as small as an iphone going to be powerfull enough to display a 1080p picture at a good frame rate and everything? Not to even mention audio. I think apple may have gotten a little carried away with making things smaller. This isnāt really a product that needs to be smaller. Hopefully it works well despite itās tiny size. knowing apple though, it probably will. One thing for sure though, itāll probably have better quality than a $100 DVD player.
The iphone and itouch are already way better than the nintendo DS. Almost better graphics, more accurate touch screen, smaller, cheeper games, more variety of games. The only thing that the nintendo DS wins at is battery life. This is just proof to me that apple WILL come out with a gaming system. and it will rock.
Well the HTC EVO 4G has an HDMI out (granted mine only does 720P) and it isnāt much larger than the current iPhone so I think its certainly possible.
Unsure about a new Apple TV having any impact.
Outside of the USA, where does it have any users at all?
Or asked differently? Are there more than a handfull of countries where Apple has so far got any TV series / dvd licenses at all? Because those are the only countries where it makes a difference. Thats basically the USA to my knowledge, isnāt it?
? You mean TV-Shows and Movies on the iTunes Store? Available in germany (but not austria) UK and I guess in many other countries.
The key is that they are abandoning the āoldā Apple TV platform, which was never the best option for doing what it could do, and as such never found much of an audience.
(Why would I buy an Apple TV when I can get a PS3 with Blu-ray, Netflix streaming, a built-in hard drive and the ability to play PS3 games for about the same money?)
This new product, being based on the iPhone OS, will most likely blow the lid off home console gaming the same way the iPhone/iPod did with portable gaming. Could be another great market for indie game devs.
I donāt see how a box with a cpu and cloud focus and 16gb space is entering the console market at all.
its not like you can store much on it and the A4 is also not even remotely capable as gaming hardware. its already significantly underpowered for the ipad and that quite a bit less pixel space to cover than 720p or even 1080p
I expect it to be a digital audio but especially video streaming service for the time being plus in addition something like Nintendos GBA player for the GC which upscales iphone rendered games to fullscreen which is what is reasonably possible at all within that chips possibilities.
Its nice if they replace the old Apple TV with a more useful way lower priced one.
But reading this thread i wondered that some automatically assume that because it could run iPhone OS that would automatically mean it would run all the apps from the app store and that way would be used as console.
Isn“t something essential missing for that, like, a( touch based) controller?
I imagine depending on what it has as controls input device one would either not be able to control any existing iPhone apps with it at all or would have to create a custom controls option for it at least besides the point that one would also have to make the apps resolution/ aspect ratio independent.
Its interesting to where this will evolve, but yeah, regarding all this i don“t see how it could turn into an out of the box outlet for all the existing apps or games in general right away.
It could be a nice first step for them though to get larger apple tv adoption and establish iTunes media delivery in the living room on the tv which then could be used later for other things.
I could see the iPod Touch and iPhone being used as the remote control. And the biggest victory for the iPhone has been the success of the App Store, so I would be shocked if Apple doesnāt try to repeat that success in the living room.
+1
Thereās no way they can do better at $99. I donāt think itās a good video game controller, because you canāt feel it, but it sounds like an Apple-y thing to do. I bet theyāll stick an Apple Remote in the box, and then require people to buy an iPod touch to play most games.
It will work just like Unity Remote, only look better.
And with a bit of apple greed, you must have a mobileme subscription to use the cloud services.
Sure, any existing iDevice could in theory be used as remote, they could instead also just go for using something like the current apple remote though, who knows at this point =).
I personally don“t think using the iDevices would be great as input device for a tv, because, you know, touch screens with no tactile feedback aren“t that good as input device when you“re not looking at their screen while using them.
So going with using iDevices as controller would also sorta make many game types running on the iPhone right now not well controllable at all.
Sure some kind of apps could still be nicely done with that option, too but it would have to be an app tailored for that, most current iPhone apps would not be fun with such a controls option.
I don“t disagree regarding the point that Apple sure would like to get iTunes and later maybe also the app store into the living room more over time, regarding the (iPhone) apps side i just don“t think its as easy as just releasing a box with iPhone OS to be connected to the tv.
Personally i feel like if they can think of a nice controller one could maybe over time create custom apps for that and that could be cool, just using a connected iDevice as controller would be very limiting regarding what types of apps could be controlled well while looking at the tv.
Except the DS has a physical controller and real buttons. And for many genres, that still provides better control than a touch screen or rotation sensor.
Normally Iād agree with you, but I havenāt been able to use a Nintendo handheld for any reasonable length of time since the original Game Boy, unless it was stylus-only. I assume Nintendo targets the hands of Japanese children because their handhelds just make my hands cramp up.
