I mean…the only thing left is a full body suit like the VRGluv. Any other thoughts on these items working together? I know it would cost a pretty large sum to get these or any similar product, but I like the direction vr is going.
Next step is 4k per eye with foveated rendering, hands down, the low resolution is the biggest problem right now for consumer VR
Definitely this, even for games that have a perfect analog like car racing, the low resolution is a killer. I still prefer to play Assetto Corsa not in VR because even though your more immersed in VR everything in the distance is not good due to lack of resolution.
Wireless!
I had no idea low resolution was a problem. I haven’t had a chance to use anything VR yet. Sounds like that should actually be fixed first before any other advancements.
That would be awesome if they could do it with minimal to no lag.
On oculus devkit 2 you could see the grid in front of your eyes and things were pretty pixelated. It was not dissimilar to looking at the scene through cloth. Small text in distance would’ve been unreadable.
Also, keep in mind that estimated resolution of human eye is 576 megapixels.
Also, regarding “the only thing left”, AFAIK, if someone wants “full immersion”, then VR tech currently doesn’t even engage all senses. There’s no proper tactile feedback systems, your vestibular system is not engaged into simulation, same applies to sense of smell and taste (well, that one is probably not THAT useful), ability to sense temperature, etc. So, there are quite a lot of things “left” which are not currently available.
I meant only thing left in the sense of what I posted. Since I posted a glove that gives feedback, I thought the only thing to make that better, with that technology, is a full suit. Of course there’s a lot more left to actually do. If the end game of VR truly is the “dive” sensation like that of Tron or Sao, then we have a long ways to go lol
What’s the next step in virtual reality? Affordable headsets.
Did you see the recommended specs for that? I wish I had those specs.
They’re about what I would expect for the technical capabilities of the headset. The Oculus Rift and HTC Vive have lower recommended specifications, but they also have lower resolutions for the displays (1080 by 1200 vs 1440 by 1440). Once Oculus and HTC upgrade their hardware you absolutely will need at least the same hardware this headset needs.
That said the hardware just sounds expensive. The Ryzen 7 1700 eight-core processor costs less than the quad-core i7-7700K, but if that wasn’t cheap enough you could choose the Ryzen 5 1600X (fewer cores but much higher clock rates) for $75 less. Then you have the GTX 1060 which ties the GTX 980 for performance while costing half as much.
Basically we’re talking about a computer costing under $1,000. If you can’t afford at least that much of a computer then you have no hope whatsoever of being able to afford virtual reality equipment outside of third party experiences like IMAX.
We won’t see another major cost decrease until AMD Zen 2 and NVIDIA Volta which are due in a year or two.
Huh. How does this one compare to rift/vive?
–edit–
Ah, I see what the catch it. It is windows 10 only.
Going off of newegg
Ryzen 7 - $299
EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 - $329
Yeah, you’re right for just those components. Assuming someone already had a computer (which I hope is the case if they are looking at VR headsets and development forums) It would be under $700. I didn’t look at the prices beforehand, so that’s my bad ![]()
It’s likely better compared to the HoloLens as I feel like it’s intended to be a budget HoloLens for developers.
Yeah I spend entirely too much time playing around with PC Part Picker. ![]()
We dont want affordable headsets we want good headsets. First make good headsets, then scale them down so the masses can afford it
Why can’t we have both? Seriously, the Acer headset has a higher resolution and the same refresh rate as the Rift and Vive while having a significantly lower cost tied to it and it’s a developer edition at that. Only caveat to this headset as far as I’m aware is that Microsoft is using it to push their OS.
It’s cheaper with good quality while supporting VR, AR, and Mixed. Sounds like a really good option for me since I already use Windows 10
There’s more than that into it if comparing to the Vive and Rift. The cost does not include any controllers and even if you get them later they are tracked by the headset meaning they cant be tracked properly if they go out of view. Also as it’s inside out tracking there can be small drifting. At the moment these are for UWP only meaning it’s not only that you need to use Windows 10 but you also can’t use VR titles from Steam.
For the resolution, it’s not the only thing to look at as you will be watching the displays with a special lenses. I don’t know what type displays and lenses they use the Windows ones but PSVR, Vive and Rift have all their advantages and disadvantages.
We will get there eventually, but new tech is always expensive. Isnt the Acer a AR headset btw? How is room scale with it? Plus optics are expensive, and will be expensive for a long time. Not even in the Vive is there good quality lenses becasue of the low consumer price. I suspect the Acer to have really low quality fresnel lenses, but its just a guess.
edit. Cheap fresnels confirmed
It uses fresnel lenses, and according to its official specs it has a 95 degrees horizontal field of view.
The Acer’s lenses just can’t compare with the more expensive headsets. They seemed to suffer from a bit more distortion around the edges, although if the headset is worn precisely in your ‘sweet spot’ you might not notice this.
The eye reliaf in the Vive and Rift are already horrible, to get it even worse is not a sweet deal in my opinion
BTW how is the headset even called mixed reality? to me it looks like there are only depth cameras on the sides but no regular ones seen anywhere so you cant even do actual AR/MR?
I would easy pay 2000 USD for a 4k per eye, foveated powered headset with high quality lenses. Why cant they make that?!
People pay more for OLED TV’s, should be a market
