waving If someone wants to collaborate on a game like this don’t hesitate to contact me! still waving

Hah! It’s out… :O)

Oh jippie since such a long time there finally is an adventure out with good dialogues and logic riddles (a little bit too easy so far) again. Just went thrugh the office scene and i liked the gfx as well as the camera. Cute…

The distribution size is really small with 72MB. With the beginning of 2007 releasing each month another episode sounds quite okay. Sure it would have been much better to get a cd with the complete game but the intervals are better than those of hl2.

The only thing which bugs me are that this is no crossplatform distribution. I really see no problem doing such a game with unity… :O) well, once shadows are there… ;O) …shouting AND SOMEONE WHO CAN MODEL! ;OP

Wheeee,

taumel

PS: Holy cow i passed 1k already…

Why? They don’t seem to be using anything more advanced than simple circular blob shadows

Come on i was joking guys! :O) Nothing to worry about…it’s adventure day!

Heho freyr be prepared for a little dance… www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-9my0tsutw&mode=related&search=

Taumel, dude, I think you need to lay off the hard stuff. You’re starting to worry me!

cough agreed :expressionless:

No passion in your ba… ahm in you guys?! :O)

Well, then i have to offer some educational stuff. So sit down and make your notes. This is an important lesson for you all!

Questions will be asked to you afterwards. Those who can answer all questions correctly will get a unity3 licence for almost free cough.

Turning on the beamer…3…2…1…

/me is stealing himself out of the class…where was this bottle of red wine again?!

ARRRRRRR!!!

Regardless of what psychotropic substances taumel is ingesting this week, I’d love to know how the new Sam Max plays. When I first saw it I was really excited, but I almost wish they had stuck to the 2D stuff from what I have seen so far. Taumel, does it live up to the hype? I loved the original (probably my favorite PC gaming experience… that and “Gabriel Knight”, which was hilarious without really trying to be) and I hope the 3D adaptation has retained the cartooniness. Let me know what you think about it when you finish it up.

@deram_scholzara
Are you from Atari?

@tree
My substances are called stoned by nature if excited! :O)

The short version:
When looking at the game objective then it isn’t perfect but when playing it i don’t care and it’s great fun and delivers what i want from an Sam&Max adventure.

The little bit longer version:
I like the game because it beams me back to a time when LucasArts made fantastic adventures instead of producing this StarWars monoculture. The game makes a lot of things just right which most of the recent adventures games all did wrong.

I like the humour, the characters, the setting, the story so far although it’s not this strong till now, good dialogues!, the logical riddles which are a bit too easy but i guess that’s due to the first episode of the season. The sounds and the graphics are good to okayish.

Let’s take the office scene as an example. The graphics aren’t very detailed but they do have a certain style which i enjoy. It just feels good to be there. The sound is nice and i like the voices. I like the slow movement of the camera and all the little details which are in there. Click on the Lava Lamp => funny dialogue, click on …

Another important thing is that this is the first 3d adventure which features a working point&click steering - great! And as already written in another forum i have never understood which idiot came up with keyboard steering or why they did all those wacky mouse steerings in 3d adventures so far. It just works. One thing i would have done different is to give the camera slightly more freedom in certain cases when you’re dealing with scene borders. Just a more intelligent way to go on fluently. Maybe also zooming in/out to a certain degree would help here.

I like the 3D graphics and this is exactly how i would have implemented it. A cartoonish 3d setting with 3d characters which gives you all the freedom with the camera as a game designer. Outside the office there are settings which look good and some which could do better in my opinion but again Sam&Max is about Sam&Max and if you’ve played the first part then you know what i mean. You again can slap Max Wheeee and it’s all back. :O)

What i don’t know is how the other episodes will turn out but as people like Grossman and Purcell are behind this i don’t think they will do it all wrong. If you wanna buy it i advise you to buy the “Get the whole season” as it’s cheaper and afterwards you’ll get the CD-version just for the extra shipping costs.

Some were complaining about that the sounds are compressed too hard. Maybe they will do better sounds for the CD version. It’s noticable sometimes but honestly it wasn’t something i care about in this game. The voices are good, music is good and well i don’t play it on expensive headphones.

If you’ve liked the old Sam&Max then i would buy it if i were you. If you can’t get something out of Purcells humour then it’s nothing for you. There is a demo version online (72MB) which contains the office scene and the rest of Episode 1 and which you can try out on your own if you haven’t already. If you decide to buy it afterwards it’s just a key you further need - no more downloads.

Ahh and yes even the Options(Load/Save/Blabla) is looking good! :O)

So my verdict is: It could have done better here and there, it doesn’t play in the league of a Monkey Island 1 till now and so on but it’s fun to play!

Hope it helps,

taumel

I suggested in the telltale forum that at a certain point they might consider porting their engine to unity in order to do crossplatform releases in the future.
When will i fall back into normal mode again? :O)

It’s the same engine as Bone: Out from Boneville, so it’s already ported. Since Bone is crossplatform I don’t know why Sam Max isn’t (yet?).

–Eric

Yes but as they “had to port” Bone i was just thinking loud. I haven’t looked into what kind of engine they are using. I for sure wouldn’t switch during production but at a certain point it could make sense depending on their current solution.

Regards,

taumel

Hmm i do have no PC here at the moment but they are selling also Ankh where they did use Ogre for the rendering. Maybe that’s the same engine they use for Bone and Sam&Max with some Ogre-Game-Framework?

Reminds me of Indiana Jones… :O)
