It’s what many have been waiting for - you can now sign up as an individual to develop for Nintendo’s current platforms!

I guess this means we’ll get a public Nintendo section under platforms soon

Only WiiU and 3DS?
No option for N64 or GameCube? WEAK!
If you want to use Unity the options are even more limited, of course.
You mean I can’t image a sprite based RPG for SNES in Unity!? :o
I’m sure they could scrounge up some hardware for that purpose if you REALLY wanted, but judging from the minimum costs…no, not an option for the average, broke-ass indie
OK, maybe there’s hope:
Whether you can afford the development hardware is another matter.
Yeah, I can buy many comfy chairs for the price of that snake
If that’s their new “NX” console people are going to be so disappointed.
At least the launch price is better than the Wii U’s.
yap sadly, I would love to dev for wii though, such a nice console! but who buy games for wii these days!?
they really need to keep a strong curation system during game submissions. Also cost of devkits should be lowered.
One thing is resolved by the other
Actually u could sign up as individual before, its just there are several developer programs before. now they are merged into just one.
Yep, the REAL program that let you create cartridges was off-limits to individuals. Now you just sign up whether you have an office separate from your home address or not (why discriminate against mansion owners anyway?), and buy the hardware for the sort of development you need. The pandas are fine, but I hate the snakes - that seems like a natural barrier against shovelware though.
also u could not dev c/c++ development, indie program was severely limited to wiiu-unity, also there were geographical limitation for application acceptance. I was surprised when my application was granted, I got that on the happiest day! Eid-ul-fitr!
Anyway I think nintendo calls us and we indie should answer. I am excited about NX.
Dude, if they made a Unity Plugin that allowed you to develop NES games in Unity, I’d be on that so hard.
It would be awesome if you could say your game was “Now available on Windows, Mac, Linux…and the Nintendo Entertainment System!”
So basically you can now just register and access the tools right away? The whole application with possible rejection has been removed?
If they merge the systems, does this mean I am able to develop for 3DS now even though I could only develop for WiiU before?
Also, Nintendo should release other historic platforms as well, including Unity support.
I want to create games for N64. In fact, everyone should be able to develop games for N64. It’s the best console.
They didn’t reject me
Yep, it’s all one developer account now. Wii U and all the DS variants. Just need to buy hardware, which is a real expense.
They’d have to convince UT it’s worth it first though
I think they wrote about the limitations of the various systems, and nothing before the 3DS was even worth bothering with. Looks like the special Nintendo version only supports The New 3DS (the one after 3DS XL, with more RAM and stuff). I guess squeezing Unity into the Wii’s constraints (72MB shared memory and other unimpressive specs) caused scars.
Easily the most expensive dev hardware for this generation, yeesh.
