Nintendo did it again

Just saw this more lengthy gameplay of Super Mario Run:

It seem that Nintendo( or better Miyamoto) nailed it again, they were able to make a full fledged platformer works with one touch. I know there are other one touch platformer in the market but they all seemed static and limited, instead this one if I didn’t know I would think it was somebody playing with a joystick.

On a side note, Zelda seem a disappointment to me instead. The world seem too huge and empty, not lively like in the past titles. Plus that super cheap cel shading, oh god, hope it’s temporary…

What do you expect from a title developed for the Wii U hardware which was anemic even for a last gen device, and new gen device using a mobile SoC (powerful mobile SoC, still questionable if it can compete with PS4 old)?
Especially the “developed for Wii U” bit would mean that something got to give in terms of graphics. Using cel shading to get around with lower settings elsewhere and cheaper lighting is not the worst idea IMO.

I am not so sure if the nailed the cel shading myself, especially with the more “realistic” character models and level props used this time. But a Zelda with realistic lighting would look wrong, if you ask me.

The Rayman games did a pretty ok job of single-touch controls on iPad etc. Basically it turns a platform game into sort of an auto-running game where you tap to make an action at a given time, rather than having as much freedom to move left and right when you want to.

I agree that Zelda looks dated, but I do think the Switch could grab some serious market share. A lot of people are going to love the idea of picking up the Switch and going anywhere they need to go. The Switch only needs to provide graphics that are good enough to satisfy gamers. We need to remember that the core promise of console systems in general is gameplay, not cutting edge graphics. If gamers want the best graphics, then they already know a powerful desktop PC will be the real ticket for that.

I think it’s deliberate. That’s why there are survival elements (there’s cold to worry about, food). It’s supposed to feel lonely.

I think the focused on making moving around and traveling fun and a puzzle on its own. Like a big part of the challenge being, seeing something interesting in the distance and figuring out how to get there. Making taking a journey to somewhere and exploring interesting.

I mean I don’t know, it might suck, but so far I’m on board with what I’ve seen.

I do agree that the art style is a bit hit and miss. On some footage I’ve seen, it works really well, but in others it does feel a bit dated.

Tried Rayman before, didn’t last 5’ for me. Super Mario doens’t look a lot like an auto runner.
Normal auto runner usually just go horizontally in one direction and some try also going forward and backward, but to me these feel a lot like watching ping pong more than a platformer. I didn’t get this feeling from the video, probably thanks to a clever level design and smooth animations, plus the levels seem heavily 4 directional.

Dragon Ball Z budokai for PS2 had a nice looking cel shading on the character so not a matter of console power. Link seem something out of the new cheap CGI anime that are all the rage lately, where you can’t even distinguish the face features.

New gameplay video:

I don’t know man… I think Rayman for mobile has a lot more gameplay in it. Not to mention Rayman’s art is gorgeous.

Have you tried Rayman Adventures, which is the last one yet?

Watch it past the tutorial stuff.

Its kind of funny that jimmy didnt understand why his character was going the wrong way when he hit the wall

Surprised it took them this long, but looks like they came correct.

the zelda looks like
FarCry: Zelda
lol… at least that was my original impression of it when i seen video of it couple months ago

but it does look kinda cool… i guess :stuck_out_tongue:

It reminded me of Oblivion only in third person. Only far less dated looking. :stuck_out_tongue:

yeah well the video i saw they were marking targets with the smartphone analogue thingy lol and looking at em thru walls, like farcry …which made me dislike farcry lol … id rather not have that mechanic lol, its like for “filthy casuls” lool

I think the new zelda looks fantastic, to be honest. I really dig the art style.

Not me. I’m tired of the cel-shaded look personally. Looks lame. I want Horizon-ZeroDawn graphics. (I know the Wii U port prevents this move, but still.) I’ll be sitting around until the next installment comes out and we’ll see.

Then again, I’ve never liked a Zelda outside of OOT and MM. Not even a little and I’ve tried many.

I was surprised that they want $9.99 to unlock the whole game.

I agree that Zelda would rock with the graphics style from “Horizon Zero Dawn”. I am wondering if the cel shading was chosen for stylistic reasons or if it was chosen to make it easier to run on the Nintendo Switch. Is powerful enough to run something like Horizon Zero Dawn?

Only real information available right now is that it’s powered by a Tegra.

I like the device and switch controllers… coming around to it…

Reggie just needs to become Balmer and shout developers developers developers… sht might actually be successful.

So I’d be tempted to get one, if I could test/put my own games on it… much like I can with Android and Unity/Remote without needing to jump through a bunch of hoops for developer access. As it clearly beats your average iosblock/droid device… with its controller setup. I don’t have any intention of making touch screen game, having tried they are ultimately kinda subpar to proper tactile inputs or a mouse  and even though I’m more kb/m player, targeting controller input is alot better than trying to make touch input work for a game.

Every people who diss touch has never played ninja gaiden ds, no other game perfected absolute control like it, after that pad and mice/kb looks like dated and clunky control, I miss that game scheme so much :frowning: I played ninja gaide black and was skeptical, as that game already has perfect control, but damn, you have EVEN more control and precision! And they took advantage of this to make you care about more stuff happening on screen!
