No Cash, No Photoshop

Ugh, when I upgraded to Leopard, Photoshop 7 got killed, so I downloaded a trial of Photoshop CS3 and was sustaining myself on that until today when it finally ran down. Now I’m in a pretty bad position, having no graphics editing program and no money to buy a new one. Does anybody know of some Photoshop-like program that’s free or at least has a trial until I get more money? I’ve already tried:

Pixelmator (decent, but I didn’t like the shortcuts and it slapped a nice ol’ watermark on my work)
Seashore (No transparency as far as I can tell)
GraphicsConverter (I haven’t used this in a while, but last time I did I couldn’t stand it)
Gimp (Bleh)
Gimpshop (Crashed on launch)
Pixen (As much as I love it, really more for pixeling work…)

.< Thanks all!

I’ve got CS2 but to be honest GIMP actually launches and runs 2x faster on my Core Duo iMac. You miss out on all the great plugins that PS has, but for the basic edits that are 90% of my day to day tasks, GIMP works fine.

Probably 'cause CS2 is running in emulation on your iMac. I haven’t used GIMP in a few years…last time I did, it mostly did what Photoshop did (in many areas; i.e., no CMYK which doesn’t matter for computer work anyway), although with a more annoying interface. Can’t beat the price, though, and I assume it’s been improved since then.

Huh, you’re right Eric. All this time I thought is was UB. Guess I should upgrade to CS3 after all…

Well, I got Gimp, and though it is quite annoying of an interface, I’ll deal with it I guess. >.< The good news is that my dad (the graphic art director at Delallo Italian Foods) says that he might be able to get the copy of CS3 that they use at the office and bring it to me next time we see each other. That’d be cool.

Seashore does do transparency doesnt it?

What about photoshop elements, and figure out seashores transparency usefulness?

AC

Well, PS Elements has no Mac Trial; and I don’t really like Seashore’s interface either. On the other hand, drag0nsphere says he has an extra CS license and that I can have it if I’d collaborate with him to make a login system with Unity.

two words. bit torrent

look up GimpShop
no kidding.
Someone changed the interface for Gimp to act like PhotoShop.

Personally I hate Photoshop.

I’m using Pixelmator. Your Mileage May Vary.

I would also potentially recommend GIMPshop, but I hate X11 because you can’t use stylus pressure with it, and it’s really ugly.

Also, it’s only $199 to upgrade. I’d just do what randy said. You’re an upstanding young man. I’m sure you’ll give Adobe this money when you can.

If you have access to Windows, I hear Paint.NET is great.

Man Pixelmator looks nice. How far along is it? Anywhere near photoshop filters?

As you can see in my first post, I tried GimpShop, but it crashed when opening every time.

Mm, I never use my stylus, and I don’t ‘really’ care how it looks, but like I said, Gimpshop wouldn’t open. >.< And yeah, if I had the money I’d certainly just upgrade. Maybe when I start selling games I’ll have a little more loose change.

I used to have Windows installed with Bootcamp, but when I upgraded to Leopard I removed it (I installed it wrong, and the video drivers were all messed up, plus I only gave it five gigs of HD space). I tried to reinstall it with Leopard but something got seriously messed up during installation (errors when booting to Windows) and now every time I boot, if I don’t hold option to get to the bootloader menu I get a black screen that says no Bootable Device Found. But when I did have Windows, I did use Paint.NET, and it was alright; but the selection system bugged me to no end.[/quote]

Pixelmator is very early

It’s not quite mature, but it is still very powerful

as soon as you can map your keyboard shortcuts to whatever you like, I’ll be right at home with it.

If you have access to windows, PaintShop Pro kills Photoshop. And it’s cheep (like $100 or something)

But I hate windows even more than I hate photoshop

Sounds good. I’ll definitely be following pixelmator closely.

Regarding your own shortcuts it is possible you could do something with applescript and Spark - Download Spark for Mac | MacUpdate

Why can’t you just remap your keyboard shortcuts in System Preferences?

Pixelmator is pretty, and i’d love to see Apple buy it and make it more of a competitor to Photoshop, but for now, I consider it just a chunk out of the money you ought to be saving for Photoshop, if you don’t have it.
