Got the Apple TV DevKit email today, and went to register and noticed there’s no pricing information. You can’t resell the kit and they will bill you if selected BUT they don’t say how much.
Now I don’t mind paying a premium, even a 3-4x retail type price. But who knows maybe they will price it like the console dev kits of old … I don’t really want a 50k bill showing up on my credit card.
Any one have any info?
EDIT: Or is it really just $1.00.
EDIT: I called apple developer support. They seemed to know about the offer but ill-informed of the details (in a very pleasant and supportive way). The developer support team agrees that the total price is $1 but they were not 100% confident. The did say for certain that if there are further charges you will be notified before being charged.
The sign-up is really to register interest. They might not have enough for you. I’m not even in a country that is eligible, so it’s a moot point, but if you paid attention you know the two models are $149 and $199.
Yes I’m aware of both the price and what the sign-up is for. What I was concerned about is the sign-up basically says that if accepted you cant be refunded but doesn’t clearly specify a price. Its not unheard of for dev kits to cost a lot more than retail.
Some information out there suggests that the total cost is just the $1.00 which is used for card/address verification purposes.
EDIT: Changed wording, I don’t want to be suggesting its $1.00 until explicitly confirmed by Apple
$1.00 is a charge by Apple that warns you will be billed for the amount you agreed to which is said by orb to be $149 or $199. It’s also meant as a warning to cancel the order in case you made it on accident.
e.g. I have a charge from Amazon for Amazon Prime for $1.00 and had they not but the $1.00 charge in there I would be paying $99 for Amazon Prime membership as they obscured that that 2 day free shipping was in agreement to try a trial membership of Amazon Prime for a month! Had I of noticed that I would of chosen regular free shipping and not bothered with a free trial of Amazon Prime. So I canceled before the month was up soon as I saw what the $1.00 charge was for.
It doesn’t at any point suggest that you will pay retail price, or provide any amount other than $1.00 you can ‘agree to’ (at least on the sign-up form that I used). And thats my concern. Happy to pay $199, or even $699, I don’t want to pay $6,999
There is nothing else to the dev kit they can charge you for besides the HW if you already have a Apple Developer Account. If you don’t have an Apple Developer Account expect to be charged another $99 in addition to the $149 or $199 you’ll be charged for the HW.

Applications developed under this Agreement for iOS Products, Apple Watch, or Apple TV can be distributed in four ways: (1) through the App Store, if selected by Apple, (2) through the B2B Program area of the App Store, if selected by Apple, (3) on a limited basis for use on Registered Devices (as defined below), and (4) for beta testing through TestFlight. Applications developed for OS X can be distributed through the App Store, if selected by Apple, or separately distributed under this Agreement.

That’s not true. I suggest you go back and reread the confirmation email or contact Apple Customer Service about cancelling the order. I’ve dealt with Apple Customer Service and they are good at refunds and other customer support. The only thing they are bad at is allowing customers to cancel accounts and delete them from their servers. I still have an old Apple Develop account that can be logged in that’s been inactive for years and even specifically requesting they close it and associated services they won’t. That’s not a good ideal from the point of view of customer security.
I called Apple. Developer support team agrees that the total price is $1 but they were not %100 confident. The did say for certain that if there are further charges you will be notified before being charged.
Not exactly filling me with confidence but enough for me to register. Fingers crossed
What are you on about? It seems like you are talking to vague generalities as opposed to the specific offer at hand. Straight from the terms and conditions:
Terms and Conditions
The Apple TV Developer Kit is non-refundable and is limited to one (1) per development team.
Well if that’s true then it’s like the original post I had stated. The Dev Kit you have is some type of promotional gift it seems. If not they will tell you and if they don’t it’s easy to get a refund.
When you are talking about very large businesses with millions and billions of transactions per year you speak in generalities to set expectations. In customer service you use generalities to set expectations about who you are dealing with. I have plenty of experience dealing with Apple and specifically they are very good at customer service.
Laws are generalities of behavioral expectations. Generalities are valuable so don’t through a hissy fit on me and try and pretend I haven’t pushed the question squarely in your court where it belongs.
You on the other hand are a rude stranger that expects strangers to answer questions about your business relationship with Apple that you can’t answer yourself.
Now in that situation I will do the logical thing and give more credence to the entity that has an established reputation and question the entity that expects strangers to know about their private business dealing with 3rd party businesses.
You want specificity then I’ll be very specific: you specifically shouldn’t be coming on public bulletin boards asking about the validity of your private business dealing with a third party business. We are not privy to you bank statements or any other legal agreements you have entered into.
I’m sorry if I was a bit rude (you may notice I did edit my post to tone it down a bit, before your significantly more over the top reply), but you seemed to be talking from a position of authority when you had very little information. I wasn’t looking for opinion I specifically asked for ‘info’.
Your spiel about private dealing is ridiculous, this is a wide offer open to many people. And I’m sure some people here have more information than I do.
Let me say it again I wasn’t looking for every person in the forums to post their opinion, certainly not to post their opinion in a way that makes it seem like it was fact (i.e. the stuff about RRP). I was looking for information from someone who had it. Its likely there are people here working at larger studios who have a much closer relationship with Apple, and thus better information, than a small one-man shop like myself.
My impression - and that’s all it is - is that they’re selecting people for pre-release sales. So I’d expect that if we’re selected we’ll get the option of making a retail purchase.
+1 for this. My gut feeling is the same that most won’t be selected and if so it’ll be retail or cheaper.
However, it is odd that the beta/dev kit it is so late especially when it comes to production cycles of apples scale. Fingers crossed that that means it’s just a normal unit and most get filled for the normal price.
That may very well be and I’m sure the big partners have had longer, but most of the time Apple doesn’t bother with the smaller fish. It’s odd versus apple’s typical roll outs.
