Normal Maps

Hey all…

Well I am pretty new to all this game design stuff and especially 3d modelling and texturing.
Anyway since i started I have always jsut been using the off the shelf plugins and tools to create normal maps and was not really the best results.

I came accross this tutorial doing a google search and using the method detailed in it has made my normals look a ton better.

So i just thought I would the link up here for anyone else who is new at this

http://www.cgtextures.com/content.php?action=tutorial&name=normalmap

I am not sure if its the best or most efficiant way of doing things but it works well… I am sure baknig normals from a high poly version of the model is prob better but I have not got around to doing stuff like that yet…

If anyone else has good tips for texturing and stuff please share.

Assuming you’ve checked out tools like http://www.crazybump.com/ and http://shadermap.com/ ?

Check this out:

the method from cgtextures might work nicely for some kinds of surfaces but for non organic stuff height template will be far more accurate.

this render illustrates where blur+overlay method fails. Stones look good but sewer cover is ugly as hell:

Yeah Steve I own shadermap its a nice fast way of getting a good normal map but I was getting better results following the tutorial i listed.

Nice one blaze Ill have a look at that one as well… it looks like a good article
