Is there anywhere legal I can download the Linux version of Unity? I can’t download the Windows or Mac version, and I’d really like to have a play with Unity for my Digital Arts course (see that thread I did in the getting started section last week),
If this topic’s against the rules feel free to remove.
Thanks for the info, I just need to speak to my Brother about whether I can download Linux on my Chromebook, knowing him he’ll say no though, he thinks all downloads are virus laden.
He’s not that bad really, he’s just old fashioned when it comes to the PC, he bought me a Chromebook Desktop for the Flat and Laptop for Mum and Dad’s for Christmas 2014 because he says the Chrome OS is safer than Windows.
Don’t get me wrong I like it, it’s just a bit limited in that you can’t do much with it, like program Unity or download games and a few other bits.
He’s probably right; Windows OS is a pretty virus-rich environment. Linux is better. Either one requires a substantial investment of time & effort to keep it running well, but if you have the time, interest, and ability, Linux is a good choice.
At the same time though the most secure OSes won’t protect you against phishing and other fraud tactics. They work not by compromising the computer but by taking advantage of the user’s lack of knowledge. Most of them are very obvious tactics like asking for your credit card information but some of them are very well disguised.
Yep, very true. I remember in college, we had a Vax/VMS computer lab which you had to log in to use. When you logged out, the terminal would go back to the login screen. I remember pointing out to my roommate (a math major who worked for the NSA in the summer) how easy it would be to program a fake login screen, which would collect a login, display a simple “please try again” error, and then actually log out. You’d leave this running on a random half-dozen terminals, walk away, and have access to have a dozen accounts by the next day, and nobody would suspect a thing. He was a bit shocked at how easy and effective that would be (VMS was considered a very secure system).
