I hate it seeing a thread almost dying or being ruined just because of THIS - an another stupid slender man-discussion. “uuhh, you’re making a clone of slender”… “parsecs slender game is the original!!!eleven”… “you’re such a copycat… blah blah”… Gosh!
Is it really so hard to simply stop with this “i’m against every slender game, no matter how it turns out in the end”-behaviour?
You’re not the only one. Read any of my comments on any Slenderman thread, I have the same pet-peeve. Saying anyone making a Slenderman game is copying Slender, is like saying anyone making an FPS is copying Call of Duty.
Seeing the endless amount of copy cats does annoy me a bit… But I never criticize the developer for doing it. People can make whatever they like. Whats the point being a troll and complaining about it… Are you trying to force them to be more creative? Haha.
And especially when the fact of the matter is, when a someone is influenced by a particular game, and set out to make a game like it, even if it becomes an exact copy, they are much more likely to enjoy making the game, and finish it.
No one is telling anyone to not enjoy making a game, but don’t expect a surge of support for making a clone. If you want to make a clone on your own, just for the fun of it, go ahead. If you want to make a game that people will get excited about and support, come up with something on your own.
EDIT: As a side note, cloning old, long-forgotten games is one thing (I saw someone recreating Yar’s Revenge, and I thought it was awesome.) But cloning a game that literally just came out and managed to cause a stir; its obvious why others are making copies. You’re not fooling anyone, and I don’t understand why you would be surprised by the lack of support.
The thing is, whenever someone in those threads mentions “why don’t you just change the character into some other frightening myth ?”, the maker of the game will never do it, and always stick to Slender. Why ? Because for him it wouldn’t scare so many people without the Slenderman. And why is it so frightening ? Because of Parsec’s implementation and how it became so viral.
That’s what personally bugs me, even if I don’t write it.
Guys why are you wasting your precuious time and energy on this? Let the guy make his slenderman game. He is probably young and still learning and if this is what keeps him motivated then let him do it.
No need to get upset about this. Sooner or later someone is going to make slenderman mmo.
Mauri and Piv, do you seriously think that all these Slender Man games would be coming out if it weren’t for parsec? And the arguing that Slender is an old Mythos is a lame duck. If there were suddenly a big foot game coming out that was huge we’d soon be over whelmed with clones of that too.
The fact of the matter is that indy devs have become like crabs in a bucket, one starts to get towards the top and five others have to pull them down. When parsec made Slender rather than everyone being glad for the guy, and hope he manages to turn a buck on his efforts, we see a nonstop stream of scumbags just cloning his game and trying to “get in on the action”. These people are the worst of the worst and most likely complain about everything that is wrong with the industry, but themselves can’t seem to screw others next to them fast enough. They are feed by false and empty notions that indy game development is the path to getting rich quick and have zero passion or creativity. People like that have no business ruining things for everyone else and have no business in game development.
My opinion depends on the attitude of the developer. Do they expect their game to get massively popular? If so, then I’m annoyed. The fact is, the reason Parsec’s Slender is so popular is because it’s so original. Imitating it might make a good game, and filling in some of its shortcomings might even get some attention (like Sanatorium was one of the first to add more environments to the formula), but you’ll never go viral to the same level, and you’ll certainly never be able to make a living by competing with a free game.
If they’re just making it for fun, then I’m a lot more supportive. Heck, I’m working on a Slender-inspired game right now to experiment with game AI and psychology.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery were slenderman a colossal (popular) failure but I don’t thing you can call it flattery in this case because the imitation is coming due to it’s success. Artistically or game wise I haven’t looked at it so I won’t comment on that aspect.
I checked or browsed the Apple App Store’s and it was so nice to see slenderman listed, not because it was slenderman but because some unknown managed to get a popular game despite the overwhelm odds Apple has stacked against these types.
I saw there was ‘New Noteworthy’ and ‘Apple Recommends’ but really after browsing through them both were dominated by rather old games by now. And that’s telling me that these popular games still being listed in the ‘New and Noteworthy’ are just making farce releases just to get relisted in ‘New Noteworthy’.
I looked for a way to filter with the App Store App on iOS 6 to get the latest releases by date but couldn’t find it. Couldn’t find a ‘Sundance’ type filter or anything to filter out these old games. Guess what Apple the 5 different versions of Angry Birds listed as 'New and Noteworthy are not by now. To say nothing of Cut the Rope, Fruit Ninja, …,
I wont get over the fact that many people are making serious money off making terrible clones of slenderman, on appannie for example I count 6 times in the top 300. Not to mention on amazon the ratings dont even matter because its trending it will sell anyway.
They are not making a good game, not adding anything unique, not even making it any good at all, the fact is you go out there and make a shitty version of slender and it will sell (it just has to be better than the other games which stink out loud). Someone doing that is a very unethical person
I think the confusion here stems from people writing off any game with slenderman in it as a clone of slender, with complete disregard for the game itself. Simply using the same character does not make a game a clone. What if you controlled the slenderman? what if it was a multiplayer game, that was 3v1 humans vs. slenderman? What if the objective wasn’t to collect pages in the woods? A sidescrolling game?
I don’t have a problem with making a survival/horror game, first.
However, I have a problem with outright cloning any IP. It’s not too much to inject the creativity that would otherwise be injected into an existing IP to instead making something else inspired by what it is you love about Slender/Pokemon/[Insert Favorite IP Here]
For people who love Slenderman, go ahead - make a survival/horror game. I’m totally behind you, provided you A) make it to the best of your abilities, and B) make something at least somewhat original. I know - firsthand - that content is hard, but speaking as a developer myself, you’ll find that the struggle of creating mythos and background for your world will make your creation better, and more unique in the long run.
You could also channel this discussion to the Pokemon clones that have been popping up more recently. Again - a good IP with good ideas, that we Indie devs, with a bit of creativity could take and make into an effective genre.
Just don’t clone stuff. It reflects poorly on you.
I’m not sure what’s worst. Seeing Slenderman threads or seeing usernames like ____ Games or _____ Studios, then saying they are CEO when obviously they did not put down the 500+ dollars to register a company.
It doesn’t have to cost anything to make a company. An individual can be a sole proprietor simply by saying so. To register a company name, or form something like an LLC, you may have to spend $50.
