Number of lights in version 2.6.1

We are using the free version and is there a limitation of the number of lights that we can create in that version?
Thanks

Kind of.

After a few lights you will find that you poly count will double as you have to render two passes.

Dynamic Lights are expensive and a limited resource in a forward rendering system (like Unity 2.6).

Shadowing is even more expensive, and something to keep to a bare minimum.

Ideally you will have to test out lighting and see how many lights you can fit into your game at an acceptable framerate, and will possibly have to fake it where possible.

The Free or Pro versions however have the same light limitations. Often you may as well notice some lights turning on or off as you get too far from them to better optimize for the nearest light locations.

But on the bright side Unity 3.0 is deferred rendering making lights incredibly cheap and plentiful, so if you plan on upgrading you can plan for an incredibly lax limit on lighting in the near future.

Thank you very much

We are decided to purchase the pro now and evolve to the version 3 when it arrives.
I like the environment.
Thanks again

Check into running the lightmapping in Unity as well. And your scene looks very good.

That depends on pixel lights vs. vertex lights. Vertex lighting isn’t very expensive and doesn’t increase draw calls or poly count.

The number of lights with pixel lights is limited by what you have in the quality settings, up to a maximum of 8 I think. There’s no limit with the number of vertex lights, although only 8 can affect any one object.

Can someone help me understand this “how many lights issue”.

Morrowind which was released in 2002 an older game engine could have quite a few moving lights. Guards walked back and forth with torches and lanterns and the player could carry one.

We could even carry as many candles and place them into the world or a house.

Why wasn’t that a choke on the computer system? Why could you have as many lights as you wanted there and that is an older engine versus our newer engines like Unity?

Or is it as simple as “that was a more expensive engine than their commercial one”? (But imho, Unity is far more beautiful than Gambryo Oblivion, but Gambryo Fallout 3 looks and renders much better than Oblivion. Stands back and waits for the flames from Gambryo Oblivion fans.)

Forgive my stupidity here. Please educmacate me on this lights issue.
