Nvidia equivalent of an ATI card?

I have this Linux box that I do most of my gaming on, and it needs a new GPU. I want an nVidia card becuase Ubuntu Linux supports nVidia drivers better than ATI drivers. In other words, nVidia drivers are easier to install and I don’t want to mess with anything too complex or I might kill my Xorg. ( in other words, bad things could happen ). Soo…

On the iMac that I use regularly, I have an

ATI Radeon HD 2600

So far this card has held up wonderfully to anything I throw at it, Unity in particular.

I am wondering what the Nvidia equivalent ( >= ) is. I googled it but I couldn’t find any helpful side-by-side comparisons.

If you guys know where to get this info it would be much appreciated. :slight_smile:

Something like GeForce 8600 should be quite similar (almost the same memory bandwidth, higher fillrate). Speeds of those cards vary depending on the actual variant (2600Pro, 2600XT, …, 8600GT, 8600GS, …).
