With Unity supporting Deferred Rendering on mobile, and future mobile GPU like these, is there any wonder console will NOT survive?
There’s no doubt that handheld devices are on the way out in the way of a phone. However, how much power/heat dissipation does this GPU require? If you have to plug in your phone every hour or two to play a game, it’s not going to be that advantageous.
From here: Nvidia aims to blow away mobile graphics competitors with Project Logan | VentureBeat
“The revolutionary part is that Logan will deliver hyper-realistic graphics, like the Ira demo, on only two to three watts of power. That’s well within the envelope for mobile devices such as tablets and some smartphones too. Vivoli shows that it is possible to balance the often competing demands of performance and power efficiency. Performance per watt will be three times better than that of an Apple iPad 4, Vivoli said. Starting next year, Kepler will span every Nvidia product family from chips for everything from mobile to supercomputers.”
The way things are going now, in just a few years I think pretty much all phones, tablets, consoles etc will all be at a pretty impressive minimum spec, like at least Tegra4 type of performance or better. The days of not being able to do xyz because performance is too bad are somewhat numbered, although I’m sure people will simply add more polygons, textures, lights, resolution, etc to gobble up the gains and then complain about it being slow, lol
Again with the consoles are dying. Neither consoles nor pc gaming is dying.
You’ve never answered when I’ve asked why you want consoles to die so much?
I guess consoles are dying like the pc has been dying since the 80’s.
So long as tv screens are bigger than tablet screens there will be consoles.

With AirPlay Mirroring why would you need console? ![]()
I am not hoping consoles are going to die, I am saying it as a statement, they are going to die.
PC is different to console, it serves a different purpose, PC is a PRODUCTIVITY TOOL, that’s its PRIMARY PURPOSE. Gaming on PC serves mainly a peripheral function. People buy PC primarily to do WORK.
Console on the other hand serves no other purpose other than as an ENTERTAINMENT DEVICE. That’s its ONLY purpose. When that purpose is taken over by the mobile devices, IT BECOMES IRRELEVENT.
The console can only TRY to outpace the mobile by throwing better graphics and enhanced experience into its bag of tricks, but its becoming more of an exercise of diminishing return for the console both hardware wise and software wise for the developers (you need 100x~1000+x manpower to create stunning visual to make use of all those new advances - think AAA games such as Assassin’s Creed or Grand Theft Auto V which were only targeted for current gen and already needing over 500 people to make - the next gen it will be worse)
Another thing, this is the news from yesterday :
Apple reports Q3 2013 revenue of $35.3 billion: 31.2 million iPhones sold
In a single quarter (that’s 3 months, or roughly 90 days; and its not even their best quarter), 31.2 MILLION iPHONES WERE SOLD. Since last year when iPhone 5 first came out, over 55 MILLION iPhones were sold (that number was from May, probably does not include the 31.2 million just reported few days ago).
XBOX 360 came out in 2005, its been almost 8 YEARS. Guess how many units they sold. I will give you a hint ![]()
Worldwide: 77.2 million (as of March 31, 2013).
It takes iPhone a single year to beat XBox 360’s total sales to date. And I didn’t even include the Androids.
Its not hard to see where the market is, and why consoles will die.
Also, the videos you saw above was running on Logan prototype - that’s Tegra 5 and it is coming out next year in 2014. It is still going to be manufacture at the relative large die size of 28 nm.
The next chip after that is Parker - which will be Tegra 6 - it will be using TSMC’s 16 nm or 10 nm FinFET manufacturing process - which means it will roughly be 1/4~1/9 the size of Logan (Tegra 5) and twice faster and more power efficient too. By then, XBox One and PS4 will only be into their SECOND YEAR of production cycle. And it will already be outpaced by the mobile.
Consoles won’t die, the same argument could be made asto why people don’t connect laptops to there TV’s, Air play is good and all but there will always be a level of it being less then ideal then a dedicated TV gaming device.
The only possible device that can kill consoles is the TV its self.
This is a debate of terminology rather than practicality, though, right?
You call it “death”, I call it “change”. Ultimately we both mean the same thing - that devices will continue the current trend of convergence until we no longer need specialist computer devices for different purposes.
Because you want something with decent controls and tactile feedback?
You say its a fact says nothing its just your opinion.
If you consider work to be facebook and browsing the web then yeah a pc is primarily bought for work. I’ve only ever met a few people who ever bought a pc with its primary function being work(other developers I’ve spoken to). Everyone else buys one for gaming or the web and social media,
Maybe they should take a leaf out of CDProjekts book. Look at the Witcher 2 with a dev budget of $20m. I’m agreeing that they need to refine their approach. The big studios could do so much more with a lot less. Not thinking that throwing more people at the problem speeds things up and letting people get on with their jobs. Heard some devs saying that almost everything they do has be approved by multiple people at a big studio.
Doesn’t really say anything to be honest. Mobile phones probably pulled in similar numbers in the past although spread out across a lot of different models and makers. That coupled with the fact that most people will have a 2 year upgrade cycle means its not really comparible to console numbers you could have 4 phones for 1 console.
Not everyone wants a console either where as most people do own a phone these days.
Mobile currently blows for complex games. Wheres my Dwarf Fortress? Crusader Kings 2? Witcher 2/3? Wheres proper input method for having good controls for bigger games? Nae where.
The thing stays cooler than the iPad AX6 chip. WOWOWOWOOW and also has minimal energy usage. Pretty innovative imo
The reason the iPhone sold more than the Xbox 360 is because it starts at a price of literally $0 and is a goddamn phone.
Why are you comparing sales of a phone to a console? iPhone sells more than xbox because more adults use it than the amount of children that play video games. Not because its $0. It’s because they need a phone for business. Plus people usually buy multiple iPhones when the new version of an iPhone comes out. That is why. A phone is a phone and you don’t compare it for consoles unless it’s about gaming. And most people don’t buy iPhones to “game” on it.
Well, you two made my point. Exactly because iPhone literally starts at price of $0, it has far FAR lower barrier of entry, making it a highly affordable “gaming device” that you can take it EVERYWHERE even to bathroom or bed!
. AND IT IS A PHONE TOO!
A multi-function device with a capability you can’t do without in the modern world. By comparison a console sits in your living room, you can’t take it with you and it only serves a single purpose - to play game. And it cost $400 upfront. Not very economical especially in this economical climate. On top of that, mobiles is catching up to have almost comparable graphics. And while most people don’t specifically buy iPhone to game on it, EVERYONE will have at least couple of games on it. Mobile has far larger audience than you think especially in second and third world country where people can afford a mobile, but rarely a console, with many use it for gamging.
Also, if you noticed, even Microsoft is changing its strategy for its console business. In the last XBox One Reveal presentation, they devoted FAR MORE TIME to sell XBox One as TV, internet and a computer rather than a gaming console. Even they KNOW for the console to survive, it has to become a multi-functioning device that appeals to a wider public. So even for your “console” it is now becoming a TV set-top box, not a pure gaming device you think it is. But it still falls short in term of pricing, affordability, and portablity and “essential-ness”, making console irrelevent and a dying breed.
No wonder you guys are uncompetitive in global economy…
JOKING!
I don’t know where you get the idea people would shell out $500 for a PC purely for Facebook, but majority of the people buy PC for work. That includes SCHOOL WORK (for the children), balance their spreadsheet, and to use it for their job (engineering, design, accounting, documentation… even game development!).
Did you know that CD Projekt is in a DEVELOPING COUNTRY (“second world” economy) with relatively low wage by first world standard?
Poland has an average wage of $842 (data from 2013 - which has risen dramatically in recent years since Witcher came out) monthly, by comparison Germany (also France) has an average monthly wage of $2865, which is roughly 3.4x times the Polish wage. That means Witcher 2 with a development budget of $20 million is really $68 million dollars if the wage were paid competitively to first world standard. And I didn’t even include the associated far higher operational cost in first world country. It would cost at least $80 million if Witcher 2 is done in first world country, and that’s not because first world country is less competitive, but because Poland is a backward country that hasn’t catch up to the first world standard (No offense to the Polish people) ![]()
That number I quoted was for this quarter and only from Apple.
So, your point of 2 year upgrade cycle and across different makers are nonsense. The fact remains there are far FAR more people who buy mobile than those who buy a console. While it is true there aren’t many complex games for mobile compare to console, but the trend shows they are starting to put more engaging games on the mobile now, some of the old great are now ported to mobile such Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Grand Theft Auto 3 and VC. That number will increase more dramatically in coming years as advanced 3D capabilities (OpenGL ES 3.0) on mobile becomes the norm.
Mobile isn’t really mobile because of poor batteries.
Tell me about all this again when you can run such a graphics intensive app on a tablet and have it running all day long without been attached to a recharge cable in your room, car, whatever…
I find your constant and consistent war on everything console. Funny.
Phones from my experience are still extremely prone to crashing on the more "intense"games. The controls are usually overly frustrating, and if you even think for a second that you can play "heavy"games away from a charging cable, got some bad news for you.
While phones and tablets are getting better, don’t forget the blindingly obvious fact that consoles are ALSO improving.
You saying “consoles are going to die its a statement” it’s nothing more than opinion, nothing less, everyone has one
PS
That statement about microsoft leaning towards internet, tv and not so much games is killing them, so that it’s quite highly irrelevant. The larger majority believe that doing so was a major mistake. Also, try combining all the recent consoles total sales.
That said, ofcourse Iphone’s sales are going to be much higher than consoles, for one all the iSheep… Consoles are targeted at games and gamers… Saying they are going to die is like saying “desktops are dead…laptops are taking over”
