@Rins: really? I was sure to be the very author of a novel game mechanic!!!
You know, in the game industry we don’t say “it’s a copy”, that sounds bad and it’s true only if a game actually infringes somebody else’s IP. We say “it’s a better version”
“Angry Birds” is a better version of “Crush the Castle”, just like every single FPS on earth is a better version of Doom and every Match3 on earth is a better version of Jewels… leave alone the HOGs
In our case, we are totally better than Fruit Ninja, the fact that we are based on Unity 4 Pro speaks by itself: advanced 3D and real time physics! But it’s not just that. We have a different (and way better) gameplay implementation of Fruit Ninja’s game mechanic, and that changes the very user experience. In Fruit Ninja you can just split the items once, so you split them in half, nothing more: the realism of the game is pretty lame. In Occupy Ninja the user can actually slice dice the objects, even keeping them mid air while dicing them! Moreover, the smaller pieces have an increased points value, so the user is motivated to dice them in little pieces not only because it’s totally fun, but also because he gets way more points And what about the swords? In our game the swords are not just cosmetic items, they add more points to each single cut! So… yes, Occupy Ninja it is indeed a better version of Fruit Ninja, way better An to that add that the 100% of the net profit goes to the Occupy cause… this alone to us makes this version soooo better
Sorry correction Fruit ninja “Rip” and no they dont say better version or else there would be a million “better versions” of slender man is one on the top of my head but also in what your saying “better version” of fps is COD or even BF3 is better just because they share being an FPS and I much prefer Fruit ninja and maybe angry birds got popular because it was on IOS and Android… so ya
Hey Rins,
sorry but I’m not sure to undersatand your post, maybe my English is deteriorating with my advancing age We made a post about that knowing that many people would come up with the “Fruit Ninja close” thing: Occupy Ninja | DFT Games Studios so maybe that makes my point about our game more clear BTW, I’m relatively new to the game industry, just 3 years, but I’ve read the “better version” definition so many times in the textbooks about game design that I’m quite sure I’m right about that… or maybe I’m wrong, but I’m in excellent company knowing that the greatest game designers of our time use to say “better version”
I would agree that your game mechanics, such as the smaller slices getting a better reward, are a definite plus. And I’d be apt to choose a more in depth 'Fruit Ninja" Rip than the original.
But,…and it’s only my personal preference,…the ‘political’ nature of it turns me off , to be honest.
What I feel from this is if you and the players are this supposed 99%, a country where 99% have access to computers, smartPhones, and game development software sounds pretty good to me, even if you are eating ramen noodles.
;p
Hi Welby,
thank you for appreciating the improved gemeplay
Let me tell you why I disagree about your view of the 99%. I won’t speak about others, just about myself. I’m a professional sw architect with 31 years of hard work to get where I am now professionally. I started our family biz in 2009 because I felt necessary to diversify and… it happened… the whole world went economically upside down. Last month my day job (R&D Lead) went away because the company is closing down: why? Because we produce sw for automotive dealers (FIAT, IVECO and RENAULT), and they are going bankrupt with a rate of 3 a month among our customers and 1 a day at EU level.
Is that my fault? No. Is that the cars’ dealers fault? No. It’s the banks’ bailout, the derivatives markets and so on… all the doing of that greedy 1%. My house is now a negative equity (lost 60% of its value) but I have the very same mortgage to pay… So, I have a house, a lot of smartphones and tablets and a nice big screen TV, and I was earning $80k a year, but I’m powerless against those that caused the economic chain reaction that made my job go away, so yes, I do want to see those people to be accountable, I want to see the IMF go away along with their criminal associates that made US pay the banks debts and ruined us in the process. I want to see those criminals behind bars for a change. And I want to live in a world where nobody spend $6million on a war plane while one child dies every six seconds from hunger related causes They have to pay! I want them behind bars for good!
It’s a clever idea, I really like the concept. At first I thought you were just cashing in on the ‘occupy’ movement, but to know you were hit by that yourself is encouraging. I hope your app is successful!
If they have money to why not? If you get it illegally then they still have the right to do with it what they will. They earned it by working for it illegally or legally and since there are people who are supposed to stop crimes than thats they’re fault for failing to stop the criminals. Even if the highest up is corrupt still means they earned it. As for kids dying due to hunger thats how life works not everyone can be fortunate, and (dont take this the wrong way I do pity the poor) if nobody died than the population would be even worse now thats why people die from hunger billions on the world just because some dont use protection or a “player” impregnated some one on accident whatever way it is the reason why there are alot of problems not all but alot is because overpopulation. Its harder to feed 8 kids than 1 and now adays being 16 and pregnant gets you on tv, thats atrocious so while the rich, corrupted, and others are not helping blame society and how it makes people act. Without a tv show maybe less teenagers would get pregnant or maybe less social killers would exist if they weren’t treated wrong at a young age either by parents or other peers. Therefore not all problems are the rich’s fault good luck on your game and sorry if I was being negative.
I think you will find that if you break the law to get money, the only rights you’ll have are the right to remain silent and to an attorney. At least in the USA anyway.
If the potential reward exceeds the cost of the fine multiplied by chance of getting caught - then it is bad business not to break the law. Add to that the fact that major industries lobby government to change the laws to make the companies more profitable.
Rich people are more than likely “assholes”, money makes people stupid. I rather the barter system then this corrupted economy. Even farmers cannot maintain there own lives with food and resources without the government hounding them for property and farm taxes. Since when do you need a fucking license to raise chickens lol? I mean WTF!
Wow! I see that our game will at least raise the level of discussion about those I want to see behind bars for good It’s something anyway! I can’t make people agree that letting children die by hunger is a crime against humanity, and I can’t make people agree that earning by financial speculation is a crime against humanity, but looks like with this game I can make people stop and consider the issue at hand, so that if one has at least a little brain and heart he has a chance to see why we need a real change that goes beyond political parties and empty ideologies. I’m glad I decided to go for this title
Listen - all he wants you to do is “help us spreading this game wildly, getting it real viral all over the mobile and the web”. Is that really so much to ask?
In the interest of full disclosure, I’m an Australian so the fervor of your comments regarding the U.S financial sector isn’t my concern.
I agree with Aurore, I’d like us to focus on the merits of this game, and the (at least in this community) more important debate of defining the line between inspiration and plagiarism. The game seems quite good - it comes from a very personal place for the creator, the in-game graphics are pretty cool with a nice style, the only visual improvement I’d suggest might be polishing the UI.
Now let’s think about the similarities/divergences from Fruit Ninja. This game borrows the core mechanic of Fruit Ninja - the gesture attacking, but not so much else that was unique to Fruit Ninja. Don’t forget we’ve seen shooting-gallery style games long before Fruit Ninja, which merely changed the method of attack. The game expands upon and improves the core attacking mechanic by creating a more complex scoring system rewarding more attention to individual targets rather than broadly hacking everything in sight to ensure destruction. To me that feels like a logical evolution.
I understand the impulse to identify it with Fruit Ninja, but we must be careful not to narrow our minds to the extent that there can be only one of any genre. Look at Edmund McMillen’s Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac - definitely original work, but heavily inspired by classic games. Patrick Wyatt, responsible for the first Warcraft game, openly tells us (here) how the game was originally a Dune II clone - even the assets in the prototype were pinched straight from Dune II screencaptures. Plants vs Zombies wasn’t the first Tower Defence title by any stretch of the imagination either. Hell, my personal dream is to build a challenging TBS, heavily inspired of course by Julian Gollop’s masterpiece XCOM. I’m glad of, and sincerely enjoyed, Firaxis’ spiritual successor and especially loved that they kept so many elements of the original.
I think we should be clever enough by now to see the inspiration in almost every game we play. I personally hope the ‘gesture-sword shooting-gallery’ mechanic isn’t forbidden to all but Fruit Ninja, because that team certainly won’t take it to the places that others might.
Sorry for the lengthy reply. Good work DFT, keep it up.
thanks for your post, it’s showing a very good understanding about how this industry works BTW, I’ve taken a look to your game, Wheelie, and I find it a very nice idea also from a social ecucation point of view: like it a lot! Its totally worth expanding by implementing a social twist to it (Facebook is a perfect fit). I guess some people will tell that “it’s just a PacMan clone” Honestly love the idea!
