Oddy Smog’s Misadventure is finally in the App Store!
Meet Oddy Smog, nothing but a tiny bit of the Smog that Engulfes Everything. He used to be part of the System, but his desire for freedom pushes him to run away from everything he once knew!
Check the trailer here:
Nothing like this would be possible without the help of these forums. I would like to thank you all with these promo codes! Enjoy!
Um… We developed the game on an iPod Touch, where it works perfectly. We tried it on a 3GS and a 3GS with IOS4, and everything went great.
But today we found that on a 3G with IOS4 the game suffers severe hiccups. It seems to me like a memory related problem… Could it be a reason? My iPod Touch 8Gb could handle the game without any problem… Are 3G that worse?
Looks like a really cool game, I like the style of the artwork quite a bit.
One thing…isn’t it Engulfs…not Engulfes…or is this some sort of play on words that I’m missing?
Thanks Kenlen, enjoy! We worked hard to make it playable on an iPod Touch and then we found that it does not work right on a 3G (none of us owns one of those)… Bye bye, big market segment
Redbeer: er yes, yes, it’s a play on words with “I’m Spanish and that’s my English” Lol… We will fix that! Thanks!
Um… It may be too early to worry about it but… Well, Oddy sold 51 units the first day and 21 yesterday.
Sure enough, my criterium is biased. But I truly find Oddy Smog entertaining. If that is the case, and supposing that sales will drop on following days, what could be going wrong? Your feedback and experience would be nice.
Is the game boring/bad/ugly? Or is it just that without marketing it is not possible to sell? We have to try with a Lite version, because paid advertisements are out of the equation for now, we have no budget. We do this on our spare time.
Is it possible to make something serious this way?
Unfortunate release timing. The week before iOS4 and iphone 4 was a barren wasteland because a lot of developers were holding off their releases. I suspect a lot of developers figured people would be hitting the app store with their shiny new iphone and wanted to be at the top of the new apps list when they do.
Icon. Everybody underestimates the importance of the icon. If the icon doesn’t grab the buyer’s attention, they won’t even get as far as the screenshots to determine if the game is any good.
Screenshots. Customers are fickle. Very special care must be given to not only the screenshots, but to the order they appear. Having your first screenshot be a near-black Game Over screen sends the message that players will be seeing that screen frequently.
Not many people bother with browsing the new release category anymore. They just wait for Apple to tell them what’s good and the rest falls by the wayside. As sad and frustrating as it may be, being featured by Apple seems to be the only real way to make a decent amount of money on an app these days.
If it’s any consolation, I was one of the first 51 and I found this game to be quite fun. Such a shame that it’s not doing well.
Well, no. Someone unrelated to us started a thread in the Touch Arcade forum, but nothing to do with the official site.
Last time we had almost no responses from these sites, so we did not try hard this time. I’ll we will take the list from the sticky send a promo code everywhere.
picked up your game this weekend and I really liked it. It was a little awkward getting use to the controls but once I did I have been having fun with it. To me it is like a new twist on the doodle jump game. Great job on graphics and game mechanics. I am still playing it after three days so it also has some good replay value to it.
Thank you, timsvw! In relation to replay value, we would like to add more content in future updates, if sales go well, that is. Otherwise we will start a new project.
Currently, it is still in “New and noteworthy” in the App Store, and in the top-50 paid arcade/action games (in Spain, that is). Thanks to that, we sold 107 units yesterday and 77 the day before. Not that much, compared to other titles, but nice enough for us!
And even better, people seem to be enjoying it! :')
It will soon be updated in iOS too, as OpenFeint closed recently. But there are a few new features: better textures, safer powerups and geolocalized leaderboards. We do hope you’ll enjoy it!
