OFabulis : multiplayer point&click

OFabulis is both a game and a research project. The purpose of the game is to make player discover the monuments of the game and their history. Among the monuments of OFabulis, there are some famous one as Mont-Saint-Michel as well as more unkown places, but they all are very interesting in term of architecture and history. The players will then visit places dating from the stone age (-6000) to the 20th century.

It is a multiplayer point&click with some roleplay systems. The environment is 2D (camera mapping) while the characters are in 3D. One part of the game is using expressive rendering (the worlds of legends). The game also includes interactive video (taken in the monuments with the people working there). The story is a fiction based on real facts. Puzzles are related to history, architecture and (real) legends.

The game should be released for beta on June 12th (in French). The final version translated in English will be available from the end of July and till Decembre 25th. It’s suppose to work on Pc, Mac, Linux, Ios and Android touchpads (we didn’t test the export of our Unity scene on these plateforms yet)

I lead the project, that is hosted by my university (http://www.uvsq.fr/) but I am not alone on this. I’ve hired a character artist, a film-maker/photograph, a sound engineer and a community manager (she’ll arrive in June) to work with me. The coding and animation are mostly done by our partner Emissive : http://www.emissive.fr/ (except for the shader that I do)/. The cultural content and a part of the funding is brought by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux (Centre des monuments nationaux). Largest part of our fundings comes from the Ile de France Region.

What do you think of the project ? Any feedback for us ?

Some pics on our process! For the first monument we worked on : the castle of Maisons-Laffitte (near Paris)

The first step for us was to take pictures from high point so the multiple characters could be visible on screen.

Then, using the camera datas and measurments, I recreate the scene in Maya and import it to Unity

Here is a pic of the integration with characters in Unity (we use Navmeshs)

And here with a test of expressive rendering (post processing shader)

18 more monuments to go  (and a lot more work to do, including improving that shader…)

This week, we worked on a new monument, Villa Savoye, a great example of XXth century modern architecture (here with the “world of legends” shader, that is still in progress) :

On the coding side of things, we are now testing the multiplayer online aspect of the game : in game mail and, more importantly, fluid and synchronized multiple players movements and scene loading working fine ! In previous screenshots we had 3 times the same character : 1 player controlled + 2 bots, now, in this screenshot, you see two players characters played on different computers, in the Château de Maisons.

At the same time, I am working on quest, enigmas and dialogs with PNJs, while other characters are being created and animated by the team.

Next monument : the Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis !

Some updates on the project !

Please meet the agent Thomas from the Villa Savoye, a real guide working there who accepted to be filmed and recreated in 3D for the game

We are very happy of our test on Android, it works quite well so far.

We have some gameplay adaptations issues though… To change from one scene to another, on Windows we change the shape of the cursor we the mouse is over. But as there is no mouse over on tablets, we’re quite stuck on this… Ideas ?

The team agreed to an graphic UI for the game, here is a screenshot of it. Still some concerns about the colors of the buttons, though :

We are also working on the introduction video of the game. Here is a concept art (by Raphaël Schilacci)

And also, we have a Facebook page now ! https://www.facebook.com/ofabulis

Sorry for the lack of update, it has been a really dense period for the OFabulis team since the release of the game as beta test.

Here is a some pic of the presentation of the game at an exhibition called “Futur en Seine” for the launch of the beta :

The game is online now as public beta test for Mac and PC. We are still having issue with Android tablets (especially because of the movies). It works on some, but not all unfortunately. The game is only in French for now, but the translation is also in progress. You can download it here : Meilleur casino en ligne 2023 : comparatif et avis expert

We are still adding content and improving the game. There is, of course, a lot of polish to do. After that, I want to add new gameplay elements we addn’t time to implement so far and we will work on tablet export.

Here are some images of the game !

Hope some people will give it a try
