I’m currently looking for beta testers! See later posts for more up-to-date material.
Hi! I’d like to show a game I’m currently working on. It’s a simple arcade shooter where you control two cannons at the same time. Fun stuff, especially on an iOS device!
I’m not sure if the graphics are temporary or not, but if they’re not, those explosions are far too similar to what you’re shooting. Seems very confusing.
The graphics are temporary, but conform to the intended feel of the game.
The idea is that the explosions muck things up a bit, but just a bit. They fade real fast. Have you tried playing the game? I haven’t had any feedback about the explosions before and would love some more!
Thanks HTH_mrsnake, I’ll try to make something fun out of it!
I’ve just made alpha version 0.3 available for play on my website.
I’ve done a lot of performance and memory optimizations to get this thing running smooth on first generation iOS devices. I eliminated all Mono heap allocations and also discovered a memory leak. The next step is to include quality settings so you get more visuals, sounds, and precision, the more powerful your device is.
Visually, I’ve replaced the unsightly green blocks with “tubes” through which some particles flow. The colors of those particles depend on the health of the cannons. So they’re kind of like health bars. I also made a rudimentary animated background system, but I won’t enable it for the first generation devices to save CPU cycles.
While playing, the game now gets progressively harder. You can also choose between three difficulty settings. Choosing a harder option simply boost the starting difficulty. The rightmost option starts at the highest possible difficulty right away.
I’ve also added a rudimentary volume control for the game’s sound effects.
I’ve released version 0.4, which is mostly a much needed graphics update! Looks better now.
Here’s some screenshots, and a teaser image I made for indieDB.
I also experimented with adding bullet trails. I thought maybe they’d make it more clear where the bullets go, but the opposite was true. On screenshots it looks a mess, but when in motion it’s obvious where they go. The trails only muddled what was going on.
I’ve gathered some feedback and released an update! Various stuff has changed, including explosions and whining cannons. The details are on my blog. I also decided to add music to the game, but it isn’t finished yet.
I’m still hunting for more feedback, so please give it a try if you have some time!
