I am going away on Vacation for a while, and know that I won’t have access to Unity at all. But I was clever enough to set up a password protected VNC server on my home machine! Now I can use Unity wherever I go, whether I’m on a Mac or a PC!

Clever bugger. Doesnt this mean that all those “studios” that insist they cant operate with only one mac and a bunch of pc’s are actually wrong? Maybe you can raise some pocket money doing this on contract?
I’m interested to figure out what you did, I’ll google VNCserver and find out…
Happy Vacation Moldorma

Technically yes, if two people never used Unity simultaneously. In case anyone is curious, for programs I am using:
Vine Server to start the server
Chicken of the VNC to connect from a remote Mac
I don’t know what client to use to connect from a remote PC, but it shouldn’t be a long hard search. Happy holidays people.
There are a stack on the PC… RealVNC is pretty good.
It isn’t compatible with the PC but, one of the coolest features in Leopard (OS X 10.5) is Back To My Mac. Which is actually based on VNC and is very simple to use. I use it access my home Mac from work. Its very cool.
Yeah, but Back To My Mac requires a .Mac account (so I hear). Anyways, I foolishly forgot that when my computer falls asleep the internet disconnects!

So, I haven’t been able to access my computer at all. When my mom gets back home tonight I’ll ask her to wake up my computer and maybe tell it to only sleep the display.
Actually, I do this as well to access my Mac Pro from abroad…I even have a VNC client on my iPhone (!) so I can use it to remote control my machine…
With 10.5 you don’t need to use .Mac to access the VNC server. Just turn on Screen Sharing in the Sharing pref pane. Then in safari you can use vnc://hostaddress to connect to the machine you are running the screen sharing on.
Does that work over the Internet? (ie with my dyndns.com address)
Also, when you do this, does the VNC view load in Safari or does it load in it’s own window or something?(screenshots would be excellent)
Hey guys! Yeah, I never exactly remembered to tell my mom to wake up my machine. That’s alright though. I’m home from my holiday, and have at least two days sans school to play with all the awesome new Unity goodies that have come out over vacation. Have a happy new year guys!
It opens in its own window, when you use the URL form vnc:// in an app called Screen Sharing. I’m not sure where this app is located on the drive to start it from outside Safari. The screen shot I’ve attached shows a remote Mac I connected to using Safari and vnc://
Here’s a nice article on enabling some extra features in the Screen Sharing app, plus gives the apps hiding place on the drive.
