…I got an iMac today.

Do tell more.
Just a base model.
20inch, 2.66Ghz, 2Gigabytes of Memory(Upgrading to 4 with the memory I just purchased)
Decided to get that since the monitor I was going to hook up to the Mini was slowly dying.
I didn’t buy it at an Apple store, it was from Nebraska Furniture Mart, they were giving $100 Reward Card(Gift Card really) away with purchasing full machines. Got it for 1179.
Congrats soulman901!
Don’t you just LOVE shiny new Macs!
Use it in good health!
OMFG MACS SUXXX!
Good to know you’ve upgraded your workstation. Now put it to use!
Seriously, I hope you enjoy it and can get some great product out of it.
I don’t know how much Mac use you’ve gotten, but I’m going to give some advice. If you don’t need it, I apologize, maybe someone else will find it useful (or totally disagree. lol. )
If you don’t immediately fall in love with the included mouse (I mostly hate it), I’d just dump it and go with a comfortable one. Same with the keyboard and keep in mind there are System Prefs for messing with the keys/mouse if they aren’t behaving like you expect.
I personally find the default mouse settings to be GLACIAL. The acceleration on the mouse is different in MacOS X as well and can take some time to get used to.
If you are going to spend some time in Mac OS X, watch a video or two about it. When people begin using an OS they haven’t before, they sometimes go for years not realizing there were some very useful features that were just under their nose.
Also, explore the included Apple software. PC users often dislike iTunes and Quicktime and Safari because their only experience is using it from Windows. Apple has integrated the iLife suite (and iWork) with iTunes and it’s all very, very connected and useful… once one accepts it.
Anyway, go make some games.
Congrats.
I’m thinking of picking up a new Mac Mini this weekend. My old G4 PowerBook just isn’t cutting it anymore, plus I need to get some use out of the Unity iPhone license I just bought.
Not to mention $599 (plus a $50 upgrade to 2GB ram) is almost an impulse buy.
Woah…the guy who was complaining about Macs went out and actually got a Mac?
Apple’s marketing department must be REALLY good…
No, it’s brainwashing, of course. That’s the ticket: brainwashing. Gets 'em every time! Resistance is futile!

Yes it was a quick procedure, they just go in pull out this little bit, put a chip in and now everything is just great.
j/k
I realized that I would need one to test and develop games on it anyway. My Windows PC will still be my main workhorse due to the Video Card. The iMac will be nice just to work in and get a feel for the OS. Plus it gives me another platform to reach more people with my games.
Yes, I agree, the mouse they have included needs to be redesigned. I’m using Synergy so I can just have one mouse and keyboard between both my machines.
I’m fine with advice, it’s all new to me in some aspects.
If you buy the Mac Mini, it’s pretty easy to upgrade the memory yourself. And get this, 4 Gigabytes for $52 from NewEgg
It’s confirmed to work in Mac machines.
Some things to do when you get your new Mac
- Remove the mouse acceleration (I got rid of mine completely using a terminal hack and my RSI vanished)
Free apps that I like and use are…
Colloquy (IRC chat for unity chan)
Stickies (I know but I use em all the time, for desktop not dock)
YemuZip (Creates PC + mac zip files without all the fork file garbage that confuses PC users)

Geoff,
What is the exact method you use to turn that off? I found it to be annoying and after reading up on the issue, I understand what is going on in OS X. I don’t want to pay just to fix this problem though.
Thanks for the tip! I suppose it’s just as well that they were out of stock with the extra RAM at the Apple store, so I’ll look in to doing it myself and maybe going for the 4GB option.
Unfortunately, their included DVI adapter is missing the holes for 4 pins (an analog/digital incompatibility), so it won’t work with my nice Sony monitor.
I guess it’s another trip to the Apple store tomorrow to get a different adapter.
Frustrating to sit here looking at my nice new mini, that without the monitor, is about as useful as a 6x6x2 brick.
Yes but its a fashionable brick
Yes but its a fashionable brick
Yes. Yes it is.
And it will be a WORKING brick today, once I get over to the store.
Now I gotta talk to HiggyB about transferring my license…

You know what? I cant remember!
I did something in terminal i remember that, also tried USB Overdrive and didn’t get on with it. (google it, its a popular problem). Im not sure but I also replaced the apple mouse with a digital logitech LX3 (cheapo Tesco mouse) which might have been the solution but i’ve forgotten
Regardless I hated the mouse acceleration and it had to go.

Actually “mouseFix” rings a bell
Maybe that can be a project for me to bring the code up to 2009 standard and release it for free along with a nice GUI.
