Ok i cant hold it any longer, designing a Bubble Bobble inpsired game,let it rip.

Bubble Bobble was the first game i played on my Commodore 64 as a kid, and it has stuck with me since. There has been remakes and sequels, but i never felt like they expanded on the potential.

Now i contacted Taito and asked them who i had to sleep with to get a green light on making atleast a fanbased game, no responce, tried all the emails. I then realized they are heavily into arcade machines and arent really doing anything with their most beloved title, Bubble Bobble(my opinion)

So, here we are. I understand i cant remake Bubble Bobble itself, but i can certainly wrap it’s main mechanic into something new.

Here’s my idea sofar:

The levels wont be randomized, but they will be in tiers to prevent playing the same level over and over. Im not a fan of TOTALLY random levels because i like to know my way around games. Tiering them means level 1-10 will have several layouts that gets randomly picked, so every playtrhough wont be the exact same. Their appearance will resmble Bubble Bobble in alot of ways in terms of layout, but the artstyle will ocourse be my superdetailed handpainted style, its PC afterall.

Characters would have abilities, almost like classes. This means some are rapid shooters to “trap” enemies fast, but wont have the strength to actually bust the “bubbles” as fast. Another heavy character would bust them with no effort, but his attacks are slow and weak. Im pretty sure i could play off this alot to have teamwork in levels, BUT, can be done alone also.

Other than that i’d give the game a huge worldmap and have several bossfights along the way. Im also very tempted to add in atleast estethic unlocks, as im not a programmer and wont be too quick on the trigger about this. I know i can do the art,no problem, and im sure Adrien can program most of my ideas.

Coop, skillsets for optimal teamwork, tons of levels and hidden levels.
Oh and i know very well the challenges of this, this is a sideproject im working on and given the time and effort, this could be done.

So what other ideas do u guys have for such a “reimagination” of Bubble Bobble? Im pretty sure most people in here know the game.

I’m kidding. I actually (mostly) forgot about Bubble Bobble, and how it works. Good thing LPs exist, eh?

I’ve been toying around with the idea of a version of Joust, because I like PvP, and I think to improve my design skills, I need to go back to the basics.

Classic arcade game! One of my all-time favourites and brings back a lot of memories.
Would love to see a re-made version of this.

What would a 3D Bubble Bobble play like?

Man if u think back to the NES days when the cartridges had like 100 games on them, Joust was always one of them. They had so many good games on them, thnk im gonna have to track em down again.

I already started to paint the characters and levels, now im figuring out their “bubble” spells, since they cant be bubbles.

Make it 2.5D perhaps, or with a destructible environment.

i will NEVER make a 3d game out of Bubble Bobble in any way, thats the devils work…look at worms! never been the same again after that horrid 3d game.

I’d make it highdetail handpainted 2d, i’d basicly go out of my way to make it pretty:P

That’s right - although making the visuals 3D only can work super well, take Street Fighter 4 - thats merely rendered in 3D with a pure and playable 2D heart :slight_smile:
