Ive been looking around on some old games i just to love as a kid, and i mean 6 years old. I really wanna remake some of them, especially Bubble Bobble, Exile, and some other commadore 64 games.
Where can i find out if its actually legal to do so? I really wanna give them my touches, but i assume not all are dead IP’s yet.
I know u can ask the owners if they are ok with u doing it, but i also understand thats a hard deal to pull off.
IF anyone has ideas, please let me know. We are almost finished with our current game, so im looking into other things to do.
Yeah i have seen Taito is not doing their best with BB, wich is a shame, i’d love to give my try on the same game. I wouldnt be comfortable remaking the game where u shoot bubbles etc,but with new characters…feels like a total ripoff to me.
And i also assume getting permission from Taito would be incredibly hard.
It’s funny. When I was a kid I subscribed to some gaming magazines. A few weeks ago I glanced through some of the new ones and noticed that they are still running articles on the same old stuff like C64 and John Romero as if nothing really major has happened since.
I wouldn’t worry too much about ripping off Bubble Bobble if you really want to. You would not be the first. And it is a completely legitimate process to take an existing title, remake it with different graphics etc. and fix or remove all the bad things about it, add a few features and release it as your own. I think this is how majority of games on the market are made.
Just some random suggestions: You could easily create a clone where ‘Bubble’ becomes anything with buoyancy. Helium Balloons, for example. Your protagonist could be a balloon salesperson at the park when aliens/zombies/children attack.
If you don’t need the floating aspect, then there’s even more choices. There was also a similar game called Snow Bros which used snowballs to cover enemies, for example.
Of course you can recreate old mechanics. But part of using IP is the built in fan audience.
Like the guy who is remaking keen at the moment in WIP has people eagerly watching cause it is keen (which wouldn’t otherwise). I am one of those people following cause I would love to see keen again.
That is also why the old IP still has value. How much value is questionable.
Yeah i saw that, but keen isnt a dead ip is it? Thats why i dont wanna just start, id want them to be the dragons from our childhood, im tempted to ask taito for permission and give BB a makeover while retaining its old feel we all loved.
And if they say no…well, ill make em bubbleblowing turtles and use the shells as a defensive mechanism:p
I actually contacted Taito asking what it would take to refresh bubblebobble, still no answer. I might do a game with simular mechanids using my tiny wizards from my current game, using magic as the holding bubbles. If they dont even give me an answer, i certainly will!
