Oldskool 2D platformer

Hi there,

Just new here, done years of work using Director and lightwave 3D, but I just started with Unity and I like it a lot. I’m trying to do a first project to get to know stuff but I’ve got loads of questions and appreciate any help.

How would I go about making a retro tilebased 2D game in unity? Exactly, I want to make a 320x240 pixel game (eventually to blow it up to 640x480), with a hero character that walks through a scrolling level with moving platforms and ladders. Any tips on how to go about this, or any info on similar projects?

I have read the 2D and 3D platformer tutorials, and grasp most of it, but wonder how to do ladders, and how to keep the thing in “pixel”-steps.

Anyway, I’m aboard! Exciting journeys ahead

Hi, welcome to the forum!

Starting with the example projects is as good a way as any to approach a project like this from a cold start. However, you will probably be making things unnecessarily difficult for yourself if you attempt to control the game down to the pixel level. Unity defines a world coordinate system and then renders based on a camera’s mathematical properties. You will be fighting the engine if you try to move things in pixel increments.
