One game a month: Little Missle

Mornin’ peeps. For the past day or two I have been thinking about a concept to enter the one game a month challenge and I have finally decided on what I would like to do. For those who have not yet heard, the One game a month challenge is simply what it says, the aim is to produce and release one title a month for a whole year, leaving the developer with 12 titles under their belt. I have decided to start small, and throughout the months, gradually increase the project span and intensity. The challenge can be done in a team or solo, and I currently have a few programmers interested in collaborating with me on this particular project so we shall see how that fairs out  If anyone is interested in collaborating with me on a small project for the coming months as part of this challenge, then please feel free to message me with your request, please provide a portfolio and Unity pro + iOS licenses are a must have.

The concept for January’s game is Asteroids crossed with Flight Control. You simple direct missiles along vector paths to collide with incoming asteroids trying to destroy your planet. I am aiming to keep the game quite slow paced due to the fact the player will have to get used to firing where the asteroids are going to be, and not where they are. A good example of game pace and advancement would be Temple Run. Start simple, and progress in difficulty over a long period of time.

There are no level systems planned for this game due to the short time frame, instead a simple hit play and go game as a first project to make sure it will get done, In the future it may be considered to add a level based system where you go from planet to planet fending of different types of debree/AI.

I am trying to put across a feel of quaint character and subtle 60’s art style, with filter grain and such. I would like to put across as much character possible without the use of literal characters, similar to ‘Wonderputt’ and ‘Windosil’. This will be a particular challenge for me art wise.

I am a fond designer of UX, And I would like to put that to the test in making sure everything is very interactive, very intriguing and clean.

Gameplay is very simple, although very precise, as said above, the control method is that of Flight control in that you swipe your finger in the direction you would like the missile to fire, but adding a curved path with also allow the missile to continue to curve along a bezier curve. The dotted line around the planet will indicate where the players gesture will stop being taken into account, if you were to swipe north with a slight curve to the west, once the path has been taken into account up to the dotted line, it will then be predicted from there and continue to curve in a similar fashion. I would like to apply some gravitational pull also to both the missile and the asteroids flight paths, this will be taken care of when experimenting.

As far as the life system goes, I am contemplating between a hit based system where you have X amount of lives, or a recovery based system where the world can slowly repair it self after taking damage.

The moon is also going to act as a natural defence system, it will slowly revolve around the planet and if hit by asteroids, it will protect the planet from damage.

The gameplay is going to be very simple and I hope very soothing and relaxed. Music is going to be an important factor also for this project, I have a few people in mind for music but if anyone is interested in contributing then please, get in touch with a reel. Music style will be similar to wonderputt.

There is still a lot to do on the agenda, but I feel it is more than accomplishable in the timeframe.

wow this game looks stunning, i love this simple 2d art style it looks amazing, i can’t wait to see this game and hope to play it, keep up the amazing work.

wow, I’m realy impressed with this concept. Nice and sensible considering the time frame, not too complicated yet it looks like it could be an addictive little game.
Love the art style too.
Have you thought about special weapons amd rewards? For example if you hit 10 asteroids in a row you get a double missile shot or a missile that can hit one target then bounce to get a chance to hit a second asteroid.
Maybe even incorporate a sheild around planet which gets weaker when it is hit?
and maybe a pop up telling you which country an asteroid has just destroyed?

Thanks for the kind words guys, and good comments mark, all these ideas are brilliant and ill note them down, but I have forced my self not to add anything else until the core game design is done and finished, I feel the whole purpose of this challenge is to teach people to do what is at hand and get it done by the designated time, rather than add stuff as you feel like it. The Idea I particularly like is the one about the countries being destroyed, which wouldn’t really be much of a mountain to add, just some small text at the bottom of the screen where a random country is pulled from a hat to be destroyed, I really really like that.

Yea, I suppose you’re right. Afterall it looks like the idea you have so far is ideal considering the time frame. If the art and sound effects are interesting and make people want to play it then I suppose the gameplay can be kept relatively simple.
Yea I think that would be a nice little detail to add.
Just some simple 2d avatars to represent the country, such as the flag or a symbol that defines the country next to the text.
good luck with the challenge.

Yaaaay! Welcome to the brotherhood!

Congrats in starting it! You are awesome! This game is already looking stunning! Looking forward to it!

Went a head and just made a few very simple flags  Main post updated. Defiantly going forward with that idea.

awesome  Looking good.
Glad I could help. I’ve been slaving away at my project all day and my eyes are killing. Definatly going to have glasses this time next year :stuck_out_tongue:

If anyone is interested in doing some serious sfx/Music work then please get in touch on charlie.samways@molecube.ca

I will be looking for very intensive SFX, mainly 1-3 second clips.

This looks awesome! Good luck, and I look forward to seeing the finished product!

Started work on some button styling, hoping to get the menu systems done today.

Thinking either you hold down and the button fills up, (1second hold) or you swipe across (might confuse users)

Almost missed this… but just gotta say Charlie, your art style keeps upping it’s game. Great job. Can’t wait to see this game

I’m kinda not into the buttons color valurs too much since the planet was more into the pastel regions. Maybe work out better when being put into context, though.

Love love love the game planet and rocket, still

Yeah need to work on it for sure. Thanks for reassuring my thoughts

It’s looking very good. I’m liking the retro 50s-esque art style. One small thing is that the US flag you made is missing 10 stars.

I thought someone would point out that  can’t we just destroy 10 states? Thanks!

Just trim it down to 5 stars and then its an artistic change

This has got to be the cleanest most visually appealing WIP thread I have ever seen.

Thanks for the kind words  tommorow is the day I’ve set clear to hammer out the art for this. Still looking for a SfX peep if anyone is interested. Programming is due to start on the 14th so expected gameplay footage ect around the 20th

Thanks all
