One large terrain or multiple smaller ones?

Hi!

I’m working on a yard for my game and I’m not sure what size it’s going to be later (or how many yards there is going to be with time).
So, my question is should I create one large terrain and build the yard somewhere in the center or should I create a smaller terrain and add another terrain later if I’m going to add more space\yards in my game?

P.S.: I’m not sure if leaving a huge empty part of terrain beyond the yard is going to affect game’s performance somehow.

Thank you!

Hi,
If you Google your questions you will see there are various answers ou there - but they are contradictory.

I would recommend going with a single terrain of reasonable size - e.g. 1000x1000 - if you use the 1 unit. The 1 meter scale that should give you place for plenty of yards.

Also, baking light and shadows will help performance dramatically.

Mainly, depending on how you intend to navigate in your game it may be worthwhile to consider treating each yard as a separate scene. Then each scene would have a small terrain.
