OnGUI APP = 30 mb | How to reduce size?

I built an APP using UNITY iPhone that uses nothing but OnGUI and 4 mb worth of texture and sound assets.

The APP size is 30 mb.

  1. Is there an easy way to shrink this?
  2. How much might UNITY PRO shrink this?
  3. How involved is it to “get” UNITY PRO to shrink this?

This is important because anything over 10 mb requires WIFI for download which massively kills sales. People want to download immediately through the cell network.

Thanks.

It’s unlikely you’ll reach that limit, no matter what you do.

And Unity users with successful games will likely tell you that it’s a myth that it harms sales.

Confused.

  1. I have stated the APP “IS” at 30 mb.

Under the XCODE project folder PROJECT>BUILD>APP_NAME.APP = 30 mb.

Does this not reflect the download to phone size?

  1. Gamers are techy people. The APP is not a game and targets the general population. Past statistics I found indicate that most of the general population barely even know what WIFI is. The demographic coming to my APP will not likely understand how to get on a WIFI network for download.

Thanks.

What I meant was, you won’t be able to reduce it to 10 MB, even with PRO. No one using Unity achieves this, unless their app is VERY simple.

Most people purchase and download games on their computer, which presumably already has network access. It’s sent to their iPhone/iPod touch via a sync operation. Really basic stuff for someone who owns an iPhone/iPod!

He’s not saying that you’re app isn’t 30mb. He’s saying that you (probably) won’t get it down to 10mb, so it won’t matter anyways what the final size is.

and no the size stated in xcode is not the store size. its beeing compressed (and then due to the DRM not liking the engine and mscorlib dlls, raised in size again by 1.5 - 1.8 times)

Unity iPhone Basic has a min size of about 18mb just for the corelibs. I guess if yours is 30, then you added quite some stuff in your scene or on the xcode end

Unity iPhone Advanced (unity Pro would do nothing at all) has a quite a bit lower min size than that actually

I appreciate both your responses as they appear to answer my question… and in reality make life easier.

  1. Looks like worrying about hitting 10 mb goes away immediately. That makes life much easier.

  2. Because my friends and I typically download from the online store it never occurred to me that downloading through the computer might be common. But given that 10 mb cannot be easily hit. Moot point again.

Thanks again for your thoughts.

okay - it might be very simple, but i released an App (iGogo3D), featuring a textured 8K poly girl dancing to a short in-app musicloop ( using mocap data) and she wipes your (virtual) fingerprints from the keyboard, which i paint on screen if the user dares to touch. The thing features a backround environment and camera movement via device orientation and a few comment sounds from the girl and 2 fullscreen images for the info page and for loading screen.

V1.0 reached ~11Mb after apple treatment, but after an update in which i converted all sounds to mono,8bit,22kHz i was able to squeaze it to 9.5MB and is DL able now over the carrier…
So - it is possible but again - my App could still be considered as simple…

Yes, your app is simple. :stuck_out_tongue:

You mean Unity iPhone Advanced; Unity Pro is a different product. Anyway, you just select from a drop-down menu that has a few different types of increasingly aggressive stripping; takes a second or two.

No it doesn’t. Also, there are tens of millions of iPod touch owners, and none of them are affected by that limit at all.
