Onslaught of the Laser Cat is a web-based, family-friendly FPS being developed for the Kongregate Unity Game Contest. While the Red and Blue Teams fight for glory, loot, and good Kill/Death Ratios, a new chaotic element has been added in to keep things interesting - the dreaded Laser Cat!
Also, thanks to Onslaught’s locker system, you can focus on playing the game as opposed to constant collection! When you unlock weapons or armor via an extensive Achievement system, a quick visit to a locker room in your level will allow you to change your loadout to handle your challenges…but beware, especially in competitive matches, as your opponents will be changing their setup to better beat you too!
Laser Cat will feature modes specifically centered around the laser-emitting feline including:
Catastrophe - A unified body of players must defeat the lone laser cat. Cat Control - Red and Blue Teams must attempt to capture the Laser Cat. Deathmatch - Red and Blue Teams fight until the number of kills is met. The Laser Cat can make both teams lose. Room King - Red and Blue Teams vie for control of a single room. The Laser Cat likes neither team, of course.
The Laser Cat is an AI from hell. First, he’s got a very competitive amount of health, and natural weapons including eye-lasers and spat-grenades. Additionally, he’s got an insane sense of hearing, and is reasonably intelligent.
The Laser Cat is the ultimate griefer, beyond anyone on the opposing team. You should treat the LC with extreme caution. To say he is armed and dangerous is like saying Lady Gaga is just odd.
As for game contribution, the LC adds an element of, “we gotta stop fighting, it’s gonna kill us all!” The Laser Cat is sometimes a goal, and sometimes an anti-goal. I think when multiplayer and the Cat are in, you’ll see what I’ve been up to with adding this crazy feline to an already pretty crazy and fun genre.
reminds me of one of my favorite laser tag places, every now and again the Alien was released and was insanly difficult to kill, was great fun and adds an element of team tactics rarly found else were.
Its looking so much nicer and is alot easier to play with regular controls.
The levels look great mate, just need some baked shadows and some lights and it will look sick!
Doors need to be flipped verticaly, will look better in the long run, could also do with adding some mesh/texture under them to show were they goto when opened, but ill probably sort that out for ya later, also they don’t close all the way, might of been a bug might be the animation.
Particle effects are looking better 2, grav lift needs to be much faster though, and i think you have to render the gun on a different level so as it doesn’t intersect the level. really enjoy bending the bullets with them mind you lol.
Excited to see this things insides lolz.
Oh yea also seemed to load a hell of a lot faster!
Yeah, for some reason the game went from 1.1MB for the .unity file to 0.5MB - of course, I cut out some spare folders, so maybe Unity3 isn’t being so careful what it packs into the .unity file. That being said, I’ve also been careful about texture resolutions too, and while some parts of the game have a coarser texture, they load fast.
Yes, rest of the world, no more Inverted Y Axis, either. You can all dance now, until multiplayer is in and I pwn your faces with my Invertedness.
don’t worry bout the textures, noticed that while playing will fix it with some fancy uvmapping and tillable textures mate. 0.5mb is so small lolz average texture size for a gun with all the bells and whistles is over 4mg lolz, gotta love optimizing.
Ah, it’s finally playable with that normal Y Axis.
Cool, interesting design. I played it for a while now and walked around, allthough there wasn’t much to do so far. But I’m looking forward to how this progresses and will follow the thread.
(I’m not a “devout” FPSler, but I do own two thirds of the steam catalogue and play a lot…)
I’ve got a lot to add still, but don’t worry - I’ve got a pretty punishing deadline that I’m racing to meet, and old technology from games that never made production to implement in this. I think if you’ve got 66% of Steam’s catalogue, though, you’ll find Laser Cat really interesting. I am making a couple of small innovations - like my anti-spawn camping setup - that should make Laser Cat really stand out from other FPSes, even the ones you download and execute.
Capture the Kittens - Red and Blue teams attempt to steal a litter of kittens from the Lasercat. The team with the most kittens at the end of the round wins.
No webplayer update yet - as the network code is being completed, I’m having to actually make the title screen/main menu (I know, I said “eww!” as well…), but…the network code is nearly all in place, and the achievement/reward display is about 90% completed. I expect the main menu to be largely working within three to five days (in short, no earlier than the 15th, and no later than the 18th.)
Actual game testing - beyond what’s already happened, anyways - will begin when I’ve got the game somewhat settled.
Thank you Unity and GameJolt communities for your support thus far!
I’ve noticed my project has dropped by the wayside. I normally don’t just reverse policies with what I release, but since it seems a heartbeat will do my little ol’ FPS some good…here’s a WIP of the title screen. Note that this is off my personal webspace, and not the GameJolt development webplayer.
The Network test has began! Game. Make sure to reload to clear out any old versions that may be in your cache!
I’m working on the NAT punchthrough capabilities right now. I’m going to have a hosted game up for the next eight hours, please attempt to connect to the game. Also, make a note of any messages you get on the title screen (besides “Testing Connection…”, of course.)
Legos, not people. Most objects made out of plastic. Fake toy weapons versus real deadly weapons. Sparks, not blood. Explosions, lasers, death animations, and ammo pickups are still there.
The point is to de-emphasize the ties to real violence. No one really cares when you damage a LEGO.
There are now weapon lockers in an incomplete state, as well as rewards for achievements. Next update, you will be able to visit any weapon locker to switch out your equipment, which includes Energy- and Explosion- type weapons, as well as the snazzy Tuxedo!
