Normal Speak:
So after months of silent treatment from portals such as Shockwave and Mac Games Arcade, and “thanks but no thanks” from distributors such as BigFish games and Real Arcade, Guategeek and I have decided to bite the bullet and release Open Fire Gold ourselves.

After I got my 2.0 indie license in October of '07 I spent 3 months getting familiar with it and then jumped headfirst into my first 3D game: OFG. We spent about 6 months developing it.

On the sad side:
We have also spent 6 additional months waiting on potential distributors. We even went so far as to port their API wrapper from ActionScript to JS for one of them, built them a version of OFG that would work on their webgame portal, sent them an invoice (at their request  ) were told “give us two weeks to get it up”, and haven’t heard back from them in about a month. :frowning:

EDIT: We heard back from them today. They had some delays but are hoping to get it up soon.

Anyways, we’re in it for the game, not the money, and are releasing the entire game for free in widget form (we don’t believe the game would work as a demo, there’s not that much content we could cut out). The only incentives to buy the standalone are if you like native-resolution fullscreen, not having a download link on your twitter posts, and a better chance at making the top 30 scores with an exclusive highscores list (but you can also post to the “normal” highscores list :P. Hope you Open Fire! fans aren’t disgusted by it!

PS> We do want to release a windows build, but we’ll wait for 2.5 indy first

Seems awesome!
Anyway… the download link for the dashboard widget is actually broken…

It is? I’ve had no trouble downloading it. What browser are you using?

here’s a direct url I’ll put up for a bit: http://games.bluegillstudios.com/openfiregold/download/Open%20Fire%20Gold.wdgt.zip

Strange, really strange…
Now it is working both with the direct link and the link in the post you gave…

I was (and i am) using safari 3 updated to whatever last version is (3.1 i think) an on 10.5.6 intel imac.

It kept downloading the Open Fire Gold.wdgt.zip file istantly as a 0Kb file, thus not expanding it…
Now it’s working… dunno what maybe the cause

Ah yeah. I forgot to test a code change in Safari and ran into an incompatibility. It’s been fixed. 3 big browsers to code for can get annoying .

Awesome awesome awesome. I got third place on the Classic high scores, but something makes me think that that gets played a bit less than Huns (which is really fun, by the way). Solid work.

Just made some site changes (posted a script with our MySQL username and password on pastebin by accident   and had to change it quickly then update a bunch of php files). Tested everything and it works. If something didn’t work for you, sorry for the inconvenience, if it still doesn’t, please PM me.

Actually, our database shows more Classic score entries than Huns score entries. The game has only been out for 24 hours though, so we’ll see .

Good to know. We tried to attract to the old OF fans with Classic and create new fans ones with Huns mode :P.

Hey there! It looks like a fun game game! I’ll try it once i’m on my mac:)

Man, Why are you claiming that the payed standalone version brings the option to play fullscreen, when you can do it with the Dashboard Widet just by clicking the full screen button?

EDIT: It seems this is an exploit:P It shouldn’t be doable, but it is… if you want me to pm/post how it is (though it’s trivial) i’ll do

if i would be unity, i would take legal action against the use of the unity logo in religious content… of any type.

i won’t comment … or buy … a war game from someone who supports a sect that has started at least 7 wars

We just released OFG 1.1.9 which has (primarily) a bugfix, but we also threw in three new features:

All versions:

  • Bugfix that allowed tanks to spawn on a path behind the camera, making them un-hittable.
  • Twitter client. Tweet your scores to your Twitter page for all to see!
  • Recommendations. Spread the word about OFG to a friend or family member (by email).

Full/Standalone Version:

  • Extra, exclusive high score page only for Full/Standalone players
  • Removed download link from Twitter posts

Really? I guess I forgot you could do that. How about this, play OFG fullscreen at your monitor’s native resolution? (Or does the widget do that too?). Anyways, see above :P.

Yes, I wouldn’t mind a PM.

EDIT:
We’ve set up a wiki with some general gameplay tips and tricks.
Feel free to add any (relevant! :P) info you want:
