Open Source Universal Unity Asset Package

I had this idea after browsing the unity asset store of making an open source universal asset package for people to download and use to help start or improve there games they make.

Let me explain what it is, basically its a collection of open source assets that people have created and included in the package, any asset can be offered as long as its based on some sort of open source model, this is so people don’t create problems with including or using the assets in there games.

The main types of assets that could be included are not high ploy lots of work models and textures but basic primitive shapes and basic textures. Think place holders, basic interiors of all shapes and sizes and basic blocks with simple building textures to represent buildings. The assets are not meant to be in your final game but to be used in the building of it. To get you started.

Simple scripts till you get your own or buy better ones that sort of thing.

If I had any skill at art or programing I would make some assets to start it but can’t right at this moment but the idea is out there for anyone to take up if there interested.

Well what do you think?

You just described the Unity Asset Store.

No he didn’t. He described a socialist Unity Asset Store.

 I mean more like a single free downloadable package within the unity asset store that is free to download and includes very simple models of objects, vehicles, characters, buildings, etc and some simple textures and scripts that would be of a help to anyone starting a game, place holders till they get there own better versions that there games are going to use.

Some sounds and music, if someone wants to use them in there games they can but its generally only there as place holders.

Anyone can add there own content to include in the package as long as it is there’s and they know how its going to be free to be used.

Like these?

Pretty much from searching “prototype” and “primitive” in the Asset Store. Sure, they’re not all free, but they pretty much describe what you’re looking for. For music and sound, you’d look in the music and sound sections.

Admins please ban this user. All his comments have been like this…

There are tons of free assets. I’ve downloaded buildings, vehicles, terrain, etc. Like you’re suggesting, they aren’t top quality, but they’re great for placeholders. There are also GUIs, Sound, Scripts, etc., all available for free.

The problem that would arise from your suggestion is that I’d have to download and import a huge package and I’d probably only want a tenth of the assets.

I agree with others. I don’t want to download a huge package that muddies up my project. I think it might be better to make a package that is slightly more specific. For instance… maybe make 3 or 4 of them: “FPS Prototyper” or “MMO Prototyper” or “Third Person Prototyper” etc. that had good clean organized folder structure, clean commented, code, etc.

How is that any different from this package?
