Since the title is misleading:
OpenGL 4.5 does not compete with Mantle and D3D 12.
Besides OpenGL 4.5 the Khronos group also announced the next generation OpenGL which is redesigned completely from scratch.
The real edge it has when compared to Mantle and D3D 12 (besides the obvious) is that companies can participate in its creation rather than having a single entity decide what’s the best.
Sure as hell looks interesting…
Yeah. OpenGL 4.5 is a minor (but nice) update to existing OpenGL (nicest thing: “direct state access”).
The “future OpenGL” (“Next Generation”, as it’s called now), is, well, future. And a complete redesign. It’s going to be pretty nice!
Sure hope so. As much as I love using OpenGL, it is needing a bit of a redesign.
Well if they are re-designing it from scratch, it’s probably a good thing you guys held off. But it has to come one day Aras :)…
Yeah, that’s exactly what they (Khronos Group) said back in 2007/2008 with OpenGL 3.
Actually I think Carmack has come out with a statement regarding OpenGL vs Mantle, that with vendor specific API additions it should be able to provide similar performance improvements.
Carmack does seem to be a bit more in the Nvidia camp than the AMD one.
