Is future support for OpenPBR planned for HDRP or will this only be available in the Unified renderer? Having a Standardized PBR would greatly benefit artists.
Edit: Appears i am wrong and there is a thread where Unified RP has been cancelled? Very disappointed but not surprised. However it does still seem in newer threads that they are merging the backend APIs.
Looking at the roadmap (scroll down in HDRP section)
https://unity.com/roadmap/unity-platform/rendering-visual-effects
Seems the Unified renderer is an update to both URP and HDRP (A Unity Staff member said they wont be phased out immediately).
My guess is that part of the unifcation IS porting OpenPBR to URP and HDRP while they also work on unifying the Render Graph API. Maybe a Unity Staff member can chime in here.
Seems Unified RP is a gradual update to both until they share enough data and processes rather than a third Render pipeline. If it actually IS a third pipeline… god help us /s
They canceled everything that was said in the roadmap
Seems to be on the roadmap as SRP Lit Shader and they discussed OpenPBR at Unite. https://portal.productboard.com/8ufdwj59ehtmsvxenjumxo82/c/2779-srp-lit-shader?&utm_medium=social&utm_source=starter_share
It appeared on their roadmap portal in 2024. They presented the roadmap 2025 for Unity 7 later, and a few weeks after that they canceled it and laid off the employees responsible for it.
For several more months, they kept it hidden, and eventually created a thread where they said that “everything has been canceled.”
They still haven’t answered my question about Shader Graph 2.0, OpenPBR, Unified Lights, Surface Shaders 2.0, etc.
Since they are keeping URP and HDRP, there’s a 99% chance that URP Lit and HDRP Lit will remain as they are.
First off, I love your assets!
Secondly: wow how disappointing to hear. Can’t say I am surprised though. What a wreck.
I recently read that they are switching HDRP Render Graph to the URP one though. I believe this was in a thread from recently. Ill see if i can find it. But yeah, sounds really bad on paper to be making large changes to either RP iteratively creating a 4th RP in the process.
So if we were to make assumptions they are in survival mode and that is why they are only focusing on stability atm? Sure sounds like it.
