Operation: Precursor [OP] is a Sci-Fi 2D Platformer that implements elements from survival, physics, shooter and classic arcade games. It is meant to be a fast paced game that increasingly gets more difficult as players progress through the stage.

Controls and GUI

  • Borrowing from classic consoles, we are implementing touch buttons such as a jump button, a fire/trigger button, menu button, joystick, as well as certain event buttons that only display at certain moments.
  • We want to keep a GUI that fits the theme but is also no obstructing too much of the screen landscape, we do this by having highly transparent GUI textures that increase in visibility if pressed and return back to its low visibility mode when not used.
  • The pause/menu button is minimalistic

Art style

  • Desaturated and gritty style mixed with cartoon-like outlines and flash-inspired paper doll animation
  • Takes place in an underground warehouse and base that is still being built
  • Vibrant colors on certain objects such as lasers and key objects to heighten visual interest on those objects.
  • Overall look is a blend of classic arcade side scrollers (such as block textures) without using sprite sheets and flash style characters and objects

Music and Audio

  • Soundtrack created by different artists with different styles to create different moods during gameplay โ€“ overall complexity and quality of soundtrack is suitable for
  • Audio design to work well with built-in speakers of mobile devices and sound even better with headphones/external speakers. - audio is super important to me :smile:

Gameplay and Progression

  • The game is set in one large stage with different key โ€œzonesโ€
  • There are several security terminals that the player must activate to increase score and progress the game
  • Player starts off new game by being placed randomly near one of these terminals
  • Player also starts off with 2 remote detonated bombs
  • Activating terminals invites a large flood of enemies which player must hold off while remaining close enough to terminal โ€“ after a certain point the terminal activation is complete and enemies dwindle down
  • The enemies can drop several different items if slain such as new weapons or even a health pack
  • Players must find remaining terminals while avoiding constant bombardment from enemies
  • As player kills more and earns more points, the difficulty increases by allow bigger horde sizes and increasing speed or health or damage dealt by enemies.
