Orientation of model in 3dsMax for export to Unity

I have a player object I want to export from 3dsMax but every time I export it the orientation is off. Which way should the mesh be pointing before export and how should I rotate the pivot point?

It’s a common problem with 3ds max. when you scale and rotate objects.
You need to reset the transform and scale of the object.

These option are under the Hierarchy tab of the object.
