Outer space aesthetics?

Things like the space dust, planet rings, etc.?


I would go for textures and a proper shader. for a simple reason of reducing performance cost comparing to particle systems. If you look into the water shader and water script that comes with unity pro you'll get idea that you can have a few transparent layers of dust and move them from script. However if performance is not really a matter then try particles first and see maybe you can combine both systems perhaps.
