OUYA Game Jam - $20K 1st prize and $5K prizes for other categories

Hi guys,

last night a friend sent me this link:

Killscreen and Ouya are doing a game jam, but with real money prizes.

From the site:
CREATE Grand Prize: $20,000

All the following category winners will get a $5,000 prize, plus a $1,000 bonus if you complete the game and launch it on OUYA:

“Most Surprising” Award: For the game that does something new and unexpected.
“Four Bright Buttons and Two Joysticks” Award: For the game demonstrating the best controls.
“Most Immersive” Award: For best demonstration of how a game feels in your living room, instead of your pocket.
“Best Couch with Friends” Award: For the game that makes us most nostalgic for the days of all-nighters and Goldeneye in our friend’s basement.
“Pop Your Eyes Out” Award: For the game that astounds, visually.

You need to have an OUYA dev kit or to have pre-ordered an OUYA. Pre-orders are available on the Ouya site.

Damn, I don’t have an Ouya yet. They should have waited until more people get the console.

I guess it’s a move to create hype and put people into “get on the console” mood.

Do you really need an ouya to participate? I am pretty sure you just have to have ordered an Ouya and have made a prototype of your game.

yep, pre-order is enough, as I mention in the OP.

Well I doubt you are going to be able to participate if you dont already have your ouya.

Nice!

Thank you for this link

I might as well join since I’m working on a game for that console anyways.

You don’t need an OUYA to develop or submit–they’ll be accepting compiled Android code straight from Unity.

Do you have to make the game in the 10 day period or can you submit a game you are currently working on?

Okay great. I think people were asking that in ouya forums
http://forums.ouya.tv/discussion/248/team-makingproject-discussing-for-the-create-game-jam#latest

I’m wondering if the controls work.I guess I could use a regular pc gamepad for development but there’s no way to test it on android build.

“You’ll need to show that you pre-ordered an OUYA or backed OUYA’s Kickstarter (this is to prevent spam entries, without us having to charge an entry fee). We want winners to have the genuine intent to bring their game to OUYA.”

Seems like a weak response to a silly restriction. Their console is impossible to get for those who missed the first wave. Considering the thing runs android, and they have a Unity-to-Ouya package on their site AND they talk about being able to test your game on other android hardware, I think this restriction is a load of bull.

Taken alongside the OUYA trumpeting the whole ‘we’re the ultimate open yadda yadda’, its just hilarious and hypocritical.

Plus, having Felicia Day as not just one of the judges, but THE top judge on their list, is just exploitative nerd-baiting.

I want to like the OUYA, but the way they’ve set up this contest is questionable in a number of ways.

You can still preorder the ouya its only 100

Yeah, this is a d*** move . If you want to have a gamejam, have a gamejam, but don’t be like theirs a 100$ hidden entry fee .

It’s not hidden at all. It’s right on the front page.

Well they want to make sure at least you bought the OUYA, otherwise anyone who is working on an android game could just enter the contest.

They want to avoid the garbage that plagued Steam Greenlight (and Kongregate contests before that).

Good point , you DO get a game system after all, and if your serious about development 100$ is peanuts

Look guys,I would love it to be free, since I don’t have an Ouya (yet), but the truth is it will probably cut out a lot of nonsense entries and get more serious, committed entries.

It will of course increase Ouya sales (by how much is another matter), but that’s a good thing in the grand scheme of things. Anyway…
