Overlays

  1. What is the difference between these two snapping positions? They seem to do exactly the same but there are two different indicators when I move left and right.

Why can I make these snap in place:

  1. But if I place the vertical toolbar all the way to the top then there is no way for them to snap in this position?

For that matter, why is there 0 horizontal snapping? Not sure why vertical and horizontal snapping rules are different?

  1. Why isn’t this able to snap?

  1. There are many draw order issues:

Tools is on top here, but the buttons are behind the other toolbar’s buttons.

  1. Finally, I know you said in a different thread that snapping via border instead of mouse position has issues, but mouse position also feels bad FYI.

Hey! I’ll do my best to answer each:

1 - Looks like a bug, you should only see one indication. Thanks for the note!
2 and 3 - Ah, this is because you are always docking to a corner of the view - not actually to other toolbars. So, think of the Overlay system as a game HUD, where you can pin info to the corners, and they’ll push each other around as necessary (ie, expanding or appearing/disappearing). Seems we need to clarify this!
4 - Known bugs, fixes on the way!
5 - Yeah, it was a compromise for sure. Good news is, I’m working on updates specifically for this, in 22.1.

hey! Yup, that’s fixed in Alpha 20. Actually, it changes to just the “tools” icon, to simplify things and avoid confusion of using the same icon in multiple places …
