I had recently upgraded my project to 2021.1 and I went to the package manager and looked at the HDRP package. When I looked in it, I found that I could update the Post Processing Data, so I clicked it. It then errored out, and everything turned purple and Unity crashed, I attempted to re launch the project, and it told me it was invalid.
I went to the Unity project folder and found it had cleared it all out. My assets folder is gone, only the Library and Package folders are there.
While I have backups, quite a few months of work is missing, this was actually all in prep to make a backup today because I was getting nervous.
Is there anything I can do here? Or am I just really really screwed?
Hey there, apologies for the delay in coming back to you.
I’ve chat to the team and it sounds like there could be a hardware issue causing this. Have you ruled out any components failing? I’ve found running programs like Prime95 and Memtest86 (with some research to prevent damage!) to stress test these components to confirm if they are performing or not to be valuable. It’s best we make sure your hardware is not the issue here before we look at things like a bug report.
Hey, thanks so much for getting back! I’m out of town for a wedding but I’ll do some of hardware testing when I get back, I have seen other oddities that have made me suspect I have a hardware issue in general so I’ll see if that’s the problem or if we can eliminate that as in issue. Thanks again and I’ll post back here in a few days.
Everything is coming back okay over here. The only problem I was having was a temperature issue with my GPU and CPU, old thermal paste, replaced that and they are back to acceptable/good temps again. But the memtest passed and the only other funky thing I’m seeing is that SpeedFan is reporting a slight issue with a drive, “Hardware ECC Recovered” with a value of one.
That’s on my SSD which Unity is installed on. I looked it up and it’s basically a “keep an eye on that” kind of error, but… could potentially be an issue?
I just updated the samples with the unity recorder package. looks like it removed, replaced the assets folder. 1000’s of hours work lost… the artifacts folder is also bloated to over 11gb from a 10gb project.
Most files are recoverable with this app. But WTF happened here Unity?!
Ok so it’s not just me… it almost feels like at some point in the process it tries to overwrite or replace everything and if there’s a hiccup it just loses it all mid stream? I’m really not sure, but this is a pretty crippling error…
Do you still run into these problems with versions 2020.3.10f1, 2021.1.9f1 and 2021.2.0a18? These had a fix deployed that should have resolved the problem.
I haven’t run into this problem again so far. I’m not sure how to reproduce it other than download stuff from the package manager. I’ll update to 2021.1.9f1 and try and reproduce (I’ll back up first this time
)
