packages.json missing after visual studio update

Edit: What I didn’t say initially: I ran the Visual Studio Installer so that I could add the unity developer tools extension. It installed fine. When I tried to relaunch my project, or unity at all, it failed as I posted originally.

Hi All. I’m stressing out - my packages.json file is missing from c:\Users\Mike\AppData\Roaming\Unity\Packages\package.json

I don’t seem to have a backup of it, and I’m not sure how to repair or recover it.

Can anyone help me out?

Okay, I still don’t know how to fix that version of Unity (2019.2.2f1), but I just installed another version of unity (2019.2.5f1) and updated the project to run in that… But still. This was a really terribly experience.

Anyway, I’m back up and running because I upgraded Unity to a new version.

Hi @HereBeMike ,

The editor manifest (2019.2.2f1\Editor\Data\Resources\PackageManager\Editor\manifest.json) is an internal part of the Unity installation so naturally removing it is likely to break things! Do you know how it got removed? It sounds like you didn’t manually delete it? But the issue occurred while running the Visual Studio installer?

Hi @samuelb_unity yeah - the visual studio installer killed it. I have no idea why/how. I ran an update on the visual studio installer software, then went to “Modify” in my VS 2017 install:

Then I selected “Game development with Unity”, and let it install. As I said, after the install completed, it was dead.

That is strange indeed. Were you able to get the “Game development with Unity” components installed with the another version of Unity in the end?

If you run into this problem again with the VS installer, please file a bug report:
