I am wondering which marketing strategy is better for a game , paid or free with ads( for example.: AdMob).(Let’s take for example, casual FPS shooter ) In my opinion, on androd would be better to make free games with ads, because of level of piracy. But I am not sure. So I would like you to share your opinion about these marketing strategies.
Yeah I’m wondering this myself. I’ve just hit the publish button on my first game today, it is paid. I was planning on releasing a free ad supported version in about a week, and keep it a couple of versions behind, so that there is more features in the paid version.
I’m new to the app marketing game and don’t really know which is the best way. My plan was to get a couple of games out with both a paid and a free version and see how it all goes.
Is the Amazon App store an option for you? I’m just looking at it now, not sure of the details yet. Looks like they keep 30% of the list price, same as Google.
As I have read FAQ of Amazon, they say that Amazon App store is compatible in only a few countries (United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and soon to be available to customers in Japan.) so I guess, that developers can only be from these countries too. Is that right?
Also, I have seen that google play can pay payouts in paypal, and paypal is supported in many countries, so why they cannot add more countries, and pay thruogh paypal. Is that right too?
By the way, my country is supported by AdSence, so google could pay trough it( but my country isn’t in Paly merchant list, so I guess, that I cannot put paid apps)
First ads sucks big time. Not many users want it. many rather pay a small sum.
If your game has levels you can easy make the first level free and let the users pay for the rest levels.
Still your game will show up as free( this suck big time also)
Most so call free app is not free. you can only do limited things and then you need to pay for stuff.
In the end many app do cost a lot more then the app that you pay for.
So if you want to earn money you can make the app free and have things you can lockup in the game.
Ads do not pay as much people do think. You often need to have 100.000-200.000 even to earn anything.
Also many users, like me use stuff to block out ads.
So I never will use ads in my apps. You should not do that either.
No, I don’t come from countries in the list, but it’s still possible to upload your game. But I have never tried it with the paid app. If you consider the alternative store beside Google play, SlideMe store might not be a bad idea.
I do think it is. The user get a chance to play the game for free. If the game is good they will continue to play and do pay for addons.
Just do not make a game that you claim they can play even without to pay. Almost every game with in app purchases has been useless without the thing you must buy. This is one of the big problem many have. Also they use to claim the game is for free.
So I think the best way is to have a little part free and they can lockup the rest of the game for a fee. Also be honest about it.
You only need a couple of bad reviews about this and you can drop the game.
Unfortunately there is no right answer to this question.
It’s rarely a matter of which is better but, more of how is it implemented. It’s not as simple as “if you build it they will come”
For the most part a couple hundred thousand downloads doesn’t even equal a hundred bucks worth of ad revenue. Most high grossing ad games are cross promote and go into release counting on millions of downloads.
As far as IAP goes you have to be pretty confident that someone wants the rest of the levels after playing the demo.
Mobile gaming as a whole has a large culture of only playing the first few levels. THis is true even on some of the best games. Alot of people just check stuff out and move on.
You have to ask yourself is a demo gonna get people to buy the full version of keep them from buying it.
As a user I would rather just pay a small price to buy the full game and that’s that. Free games are not really free (not the good ones anyway) and ads are just annoying. As a new developer using the paid model, though, I have found it amusing how reluctant people can be to part with 99c. So I agree, there’s no right answer here.
Methinks apps using IAP should have it specified it in the listing. IAP ≠ Free.
Ads don’t pay much. Roughly every 4000 ads pay you about a dollar. If you make a game that keeps users coming back daily then ads would be fine, but ads won’t pay much of anything. Since our game was released, we have about 5000 downloads on android and have made a whole 20 bucks in ads. Plus, we don’t get paid until we hit 100 dollars, maybe in a couple of years well get that 100 bucks lol. I would go with paid version, with a light version that has limited access, but be warned paid apps get pirated so the best way is probably to go free with IAP. Even then you’ll still have people that will rip the game to get infinite money.
I know it’s like cheaper to buy a game than a soda. The game will give you enjoyment for an hour or so, the soda is gone in 5 minutes but its like I paid a dollar for this game I want it to last as long as call of duty.
