So as probably most of you know, the Windows 10 Creator’s Update is out and with it is an entirely new drawing program called Paint3D. In about 20 minutes this is what I came up with:
Obviously it’s buggy as the whiskers I drew aren’t supposed to have that strange offset gap. Also its selection tools can bug out as well.
I’ve got to note that I am a terrible, terrible artist, but such a simplistic program that can yield good results is quite interesting to me. I simply don’t have the time to learn Gimp or Photoshop, but I think Paint3D could work for some basic sprite and 3D drawing for non-artists (in a few weeks when Microsoft will fix most of the bugs).
I also tried the 3D functionalities and was able to add a 3D rotation to the logos:
Personally, once the bugs get sorted out (probably a few weeks), I’m really, really excited to use this for prototyping or in simple mobile games. While it’s by no means anywhere near Blender or Gimp, it gives a toolset that’s very simple to use and accessible to anyone, and could be very handy for non-artists like me.
… Have you ever heard about “Smooth Teddy”, “Graffity Kingdom” and “Magic Pengel”? Those are my thoughts. Judging by online info, Paint 3d is not on the same level as those.
I beg to differ. Smooth Teddy is a research project that doesn’t even start on my PC. From what I’ve seen, it’s extremely basic, and doesn’t have support for stickers. Also it exports to VRML and ASG only. Graffiti Kingdom & Magic Pengel are video games; can’t be used to save 2D or 3D FBX files.
Graffiti Kingdom and Magic Pengel were based on tech from Smooth Teddy. The difference is that thsi project used more intuitive approach, similar to doodling, and I’ve never seen anyone try to pursue it further, which is a shame.
I can’t check out Paint3d (cause I’m not on win10), but their “smooth stroke” or whatever it is called tool looks like unfinished version of teddy.
I see what you mean. Paint3D is lacking in some ways, for instance the only way to draw a straight line is to draw while holding the shift key, but that’s almost impossible as the slightest movement will make the line go in a wonky direction. Also there’s no mirror features, so as you saw in my cat drawing, both sides are not exactly symmetric. Hopefully Microsoft will continue to improve on it.
In case you’re wondering, here’s all the brush options in Paint3D (without the Fill brush, that simply fills an area with a color):
Thanks for posting, but pretty much the only area that was interesting for me was 3d capabilities, and I think I got the rough idea from a few youtube videos.
I sorta aleady have clipstudio for drawing/painting stuff, and I think I have old version of artrage somewhere, which was bundled with my wacom tablet. (Never got into artrage, but I think it would probably work great with cintiq.)
