I’ve been brainstorming ideas for a new browser project i’m working on(project paper quest). i came up with a cool concept for a paper themed game. the game world and character are all made of paper models. but instead of flat 2d paper look like paper mario and paper moon, the characters and oblects will be 3d paper craft models.
My question is: how would i achieve the 3d paper look in unity terrain. should i simply use low poly models and use paper textures? what do you guys think?
I wouldn’t necessarily say use low poly models everywhere, but low poly on some larger paper models for sure. Make the character mid poly and most foreground models mid poly with paper textures.
I would imagine, for your terrain, a crumpled up large piece of paper sort of style could look pretty neat. You could sorta get that effect with the built in terrain, but like the poster above, I’d probably not use it in this case either. You’d get more control via other methods.
look here. papercraft models can look very cute and simple to very complex. I will have to stick to unity terrain for now though. it’s what i use. could i not just use a paper texture with a pixilated print like the quake monster demonstrates so lovely??
if anyone has any ideas on getting a paper-ish ground look within unity terrain editor please do share
I will post pics as soon as i have something to show.
You could certainly use a pixelated, low-res texture. Turn filtering off in the import options to keep it nice and blocky. Making the actual terrain faceted like that is going to be really frustrating, though.
thanks for the response. i am really excited about this little project i decided to go with a abstract watercolor/pastel form of toon shading with plenty of pixel art.
