This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and now that I finally have a little time I’ve started working on it.
Just curious if anyone would be interested in this.
I’m designing it in a very modular fashion so that each component can be turned off to allow it to be used in a variety of situations. It’s all done using a rigidbody so that the environment can affect you. It is greatly influenced by mirror’s edge, but not going to be exactly the same.
It is very realistic which some people might not like, ie. when running full pace it takes a short distance to stop.
Anyway so far,
What’s completed
-Running
-Crouching
-Run->Slide->Crouch
-Sliding (slopes)
-Jumping
-Moving platform support
-Ladders, includes transitions when climbing from bottom, climbing down from top and also grabbing them part way. (I’m really happy with how this is working now.)
Planned features
-Wall run/jump
-Tight rope
-Monkey bars
-Swinging from bar to bar
-Run up wall to ledge
-Hanging on ledge + move
-Swimming
-Zip line
-More…
I’ll get a video or a demo up sometime soon once I’ve added a couple more of the features. I’m trying to get a section done every day or so when I have free time so it’s coming along at a steady pace.
-edit-
unexpected work, this is still intended to be completed just going to be delayed for a few weeks.
Physics and gameplay wise I totally love how this sounds. (Loved Miror’s Edge and always fun to watch actual parcours videos on youtube). I think the biggest challenge in this case will come from the animations and optimize them. Are you doing the animations yourself?
I have to agree with Kyena, the animations are going to be a major task. Smooth blending and ample amount of animation behaviors for every possible action taken in game by the player.
I built a small test bed to build my own behavior and animation trees. Pretty exhausting stuff… though I’m an animator and not a programmer (I enjoyed the animation part )
A free version would be nice, because I’m not allowed to buy stuff (and don’t know how =P)
Anyway, this looks awesome! You might need an animator though. But I can NOT animate. Waaaay out of line for me. Good luck!
