Particle flicker at end of Size over Lifetime

I have a billboard particle system set as child object of a rigidbody. The rigidbody chooses a scale when it instantiates and I’m spawning a bunch of them into the scene. There’s some z-popping going on with the particles, but nothing out of the ordinary until the individual particles scale down at the end of their lifetime and then… madness!

Any ideas on what I can do to fix this? It is, obviously, quite distracting.
