Particles Library [Idea]

Hi.
Wouldn’t it be great with a web site with a (huge) library of particles to use in your game, myself i think the particle effects is one of the hardest things to do (well to make the look good) so why not have a site like the wiki and everyone can upload their particles. I would not have learned half this much about particles if i had not looked at other peoples work.( I can have the library at my own site).

So what do you think?

Why a new site? Just add a new section to the wiki.

can you do that, i thought that was out of reach for normal users?

and besides how much storing capacity does that wiki have?

I don’t know how to do that, but I see you can create an account to edit the wiki.

The Unify Wiki is a great place for this. I’d love to see more examples of particle wizardry as it’s one of those things that still baffles me

I just sent a mail to an admin on the wiki.

Sounds good to me. Particle textures are one of the hardest things to find.

Agreed.

What would be even better is to include a package too. More than half of good particles implementation is in the emitter and sometimes scripting.

I agree.

now i have got an answer from the wiki admins and i it seams like they can make a section soon.

Yeeea. The section is finished. I will mail the admin and ask him to place it on the navigation bar.
here is the link:

Over at GarageGames there are even content packs sold (~ 50 US$) with lots of particle effects in. It gets bought over and over because everyone needs particle effects. If there’s some package available, I’d immediately would buy it.

well here is the particles for free so you don’t need to buy it.

Uh, yes, good so far, but need mooooore!!!

Awesome, and, ^^agreed.

you can find a bunch of others floating around - someone might want to collate all of those as well. i find seeing how people approach different looks helps immensely in being able to just set up your own.

i’m working atm too busy in general but some examples for now:

smoke:

normal effects (and other cool one’s from Forest are elsewhere):

the explosivo entrants who uploaded their project folders are another source:

also an old glass PS of mine:

: )

I’ve skipped to the end. So Sorry if someone already said this. And I’ll try not to sound rude or anything.

But threads like this annoy me because I lack the skill to make a meaningful contribution to what is essentially a good idea.

We should really offer some incentive. It’s worth it to me. I’d pay for a finished library. And that much has already been said. So lets take it a step further.

And hold a contest.

All shaders become community/wiki/OTEE property or something.

Proper credit must be given in the source code

Community votes on top three winners.

Top three winners get a prize of some kind. Something worthy of their contributions.

Runners up all get hats or shirts or a bowl of soup (I dunno)

in the interest of fairness, already existing shaders should be eligible for entry.

Maybe have several categories (“most original” or “best use of procedural math”, or “fewest draw calls”… stuff like that)

submissions must be made in the form of a web player and a unitypackage

deadline. blah blah blah…

all that stuff.

Actually, I also think that the people who contributed to the atmospheric simulator thread should all get free pizza and drinks. I’ll buy if I can make it to Unite’08.

And I think that OTEE should be able to enter the contest too. Unless the prize is a free version of Unity Pro. Then I guess we’d have to buy them one of these: http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/6984/zoom/
or one of these:

I hope this sounds good. I’m tired and sleep-impaired. (up too late writing code)

I like the idea of another competition. I was just thinking that we are due for another one. Perhaps as categories we could go with:

  1. Smoke, fire and explosions
  2. Environmental effects, including clouds, light flares, etc.
  3. New and creative use of particles

As for a prize, how about taking donations and splitting the proceeds three ways?
