Pass the parcel game development

While doing another tutorial on unity I got a bit bored and thought up a fun activity for the board here

There are a few game jams and competitions going on and in all of them you or team are on your own making a game in a small bit of time, each person or team with there own game and I thought it would be interesting if instead we had one game and lots of people in a row.

Like pass the parcel game but you add something to the game instead of unwrapping something.

Basically a game type or topic is picked then one person starts making a game using what was picked. They have hmm 7 days or more? When there finished as much as they can do or there times runs out they pack up everything they have done in a zip or rar and post it for the next person to take over. This keeps going till everyone who signs up to do pass the parcel finishes and at the end the game is complied and released for free and maybe the source if that is what was decided at the beginning.

It does not have to be just programers that join, artists and anyone that can do sound or anyone else that can add to the game would be welcome as well, they can improve the art and sound or add more to the assets even if they don’t use it themselves for other people to use in the game later on when its there turn. Basically anyone that can improve the game or want to have a go is welcome.

Well what do people think?

Btw this is just for fun I know a lot of people here only do work if there getting compensated but its Christmas have a bit of fun

Might be fun for some people, but I think a week is too long for everyone to be waiting for a turn, given only 4 people get to work on it in a month … make it 1 day per person?

Hmmmm 24 or maybe 48 hours pass the parcel what would people need? you would need a group of people to sigh up first, would like to see what people are capable with that type of schedule lol

Considering all the different standards and workflows…this would be a huge mess. Mainly speaking in terms of programming. It would be more irritating than fun.

Maybe maybe not, I’m not talking about a AAA game or anything hmmm just a small simple game that each person adds to. Whats interesting for each person involved is to see how each person adds to the game each time it passes on.

One thing I forgot to add is that each person must document what they added or changed, I don’t mean letter by letter reference or anything just a list of additions and changes and any comments they think would help the next people.

Mhmm I really like the concept, but as Dabeh said it would be a real mess (even if we’re obviously not talking about an AAA game). Either the participants are all good programmers, and agree on coding styles before starting, or after the second person (maybe even the first) passes the parcel, one would have to spend more time understanding the code and where to put his hands, than actually making the game :stuck_out_tongue: Actually, it would become a mess even if everybody agreed on coding styles etc: it would just take a little longer :stuck_out_tongue:

But that said, I really really like the idea! I just can’t think of a way to make it work, and be fun.

It’s an interesting idea, but I think I could only do something like this with programmers I knew or trust.

I know how I work. Most likely I’d spend most of my 48 hours cleaning up the code done by everyone else, which while entertaining wouldn’t encourage me to participate a second time.
