Pawns - version 1.2 beta for Mac, PC

Hello,
A few of you may remember my puzzle game Pawns, which won 2nd place in the OMG 2005 contest held at iDevGames (and sponsored by Unity Technologies, known back then as OTEE.)

After letting Pawns languish for a few years I have finally dusted it off again. The eventual goal is to turn it into an iPhone game, but first I want to release an improved version of the original, free game.

It’s the same 15-puzzle game, but I acted on the two most popular suggestions I got during the contest: - The UI is now simpler - there are fewer buttons along the bottom, and no drag-and-drop or double-clicking is required. (Although, you can still drag arrows around the board if you wish.)

  • There is a visual cue to what color pawns will be launched.
Other improvements include:- Game keeps track which puzzles you’ve solved, lets you select them by name.
  • Improved visuals, nicer-looking chess pieces
  • Improved game menus
  • Built with Unity 2.5 instead of 1.6

Obviously I’d like to hear if there are any serious problems with this build, but other comments and suggestions will also be appreciated, whether or not you played the original. It will all be food for thought when I start work on an expanded version for the iPhone.

Enjoy!

(Edit: the betas are no longer available so I’ve removed those links. Download the latest release for Mac or Windows here: Pawns (Mac/Windows) | MindTheCube)

The betas are no longer available - version 1.2 has been released. But if anyone finds something wrong with it or has a suggestion, it’s never too late…

(There were only a few minor fixes since the last beta. I added a visual cue and a dialog box to make it clearer why the Play button is sometimes disabled, and I changed the left-hand keyboard shortcut for deleting the selected arrow.)

FYI - I’ve just replaced my website at www.mindthecube.com. Among other improvements is an RSS feed, so anyone who is interested in following the development of Pawns (and other projects) should consider subscribing to the feed.
