We’ve been using Unity to develop an alternative to our own Urban3D engine (some in-game screenshots here: Urban Jungle - igra koja je stvorila mnoge današnje vozače - DIR.hr - rest of the web is in Croatian only and it’s all about a freeware educational traffic simulation) for what we branded as “hyperviz” (interactive visualization technology).
Now we’re hypervizing additional public demos and using them to promote some non-profit projects we’re also involved in. One of those projects is a retro computer museum “PEEK&POKE” (http://www.peekpoke.hr/en/index.php) that we recreated in Unity (http://www.peekpoke.hr/en/hyperviz.php - 23MB).
Consider this to be WIP (as the museum itself) and feel free to check the gallery and compare photos with hyperviz: http://www.peekpoke.hr/en/galerija.php. We plan to transfer the entire museum’s collection in 3D and make it as interactive as possible. In the mean time, we’re using this demo to raise money (donations, of course) for equipping a small e-classroom with 9 iMacs (2 down so far, 7 to go! ).
If you’re in the neighborhood (Rijeka, Croatia), you’re welcome to visit the museum. If you’re not in the neighborhood, hope the hyperviz will help.
Anyway, this wouldn’t be possible without Unity, so thanks guys, we really appreciate your efforts!
P.S. Additional keys: “M” for full-screen, “P” to turn music on/off (many thanks to Jonathan Coulton for great theme!) and “0” (zero) to check the framerate.
I felt a warm, fuzzy feeling when I saw those old systems. You have a lot of my youth right there … from 3d Monster Maze on the ZX81 to Manic Miner (my all-time personal favorite game) and up to Uridium on the C64 …
Did you guys have the Sharp MZ80K computer? That was the first computer my dad bought and it was where I learned to program as I saved up to buy a ZX81 (!) … ahhh the good old days.
Tnx! Keep an eye on the museum in the future, there’s a lot going on there. And I hope we’ll be able to hyperviz most of it so it’ll be (at least virtualy) available “worldwide”.
P.S. We’re open to suggestions on improving interactive experience.
Pretty cool, but it crashed both the player and Firefox on me. I was in the room on the ground floor where the Apple II was and I clicked on the small black handheld computer (an old Sinclair?) next to the monitor and it immediately crashed. A message appeared in the Unity window that a crash was detected and both the Unity webplayer and Firefox both locked up. I had to force quit Firefox to get my browser back. I’m on a Macbook Pro running OS X 10.4.11, the latest version of Firefox and the latest Unity 2.6 beta webplayer.
Tnx for the tip, we’ll check as soon as we match 10.4 and 2.6 webplayer on some machine.
This particular demo was compiled with Unity 2.1, and we tested both 10.5 and 10.6 with current webplayer. No crashes. But good to know about 10.4/2.6 issue.
