Pickaxe

Does anyone think this looks good so far?

It’s bad, but you’re learning, and that’s fine

hippocoder is master of evil…
first : your object has way too much polygons
2 : the shape need to be closer to a realistic shape, i suggest you use a picture when you make a model
so, yes it’s bad but you need to know why

Sorry I really didn’t offer constructive criticism bangs head. The best thing I can offer is copy from references.

begin with a low poly cylinder is a common start, then extrude some faces, refine when needed, always refer to a picture. then dump it, rstart one, dump, restart and you will have learnt a lot.
this model i made has 420 tris, just to compare

That is really nice

you can do it

There just uploaded a new pick

Is 1,396 tris good?

this one looks better

1400 polys ? depends…
if you want a “hi-poly” model then put as much polys as you need for the object to look really nice.
but if you want to use it for a game you want to keep it “low-poly” then add “normal maps” “baked” from the hi-poly model.

that amount sould be more for a detailed weapon ie a riffle.
a common detailed character has about 10 000 polys…
your axe should have roughly between 300 - 600 polys

if you don’t know about normal maps, hi-poly, low-poly, baking, then begin with some tutorials about that.
it’s important you understand this workflow.

and… don’t forget that texturing is the essential part or making a good model

I voted good, but I based that on how much better than my own modeling skills it is. It’s a meaningless vote. Politics!

How do you know it has too many polys if no mesh had been show in picture, only resulting model? Also I’ve seen more complex models in modern games.

Though I’ll agree about shape thing.

in the meantime the OP changed the picture, but in the previous pic we could see the facets…
maybe the OP could show the first pic…

It’s not bad.
But… Do you like it yourself? If someone else would have asked you this question, what would you say?

Wood is too pristine for that much rust on the pick. Looks a little funny. If the metal is that worn and rusted the wood would also look aged. I would either make it not so rusty or find a wood texture that looks more worn and aged.

I donno crap about modelling though and it’s way better than I could do.

Lowered Down To 228 Tris and still looks nice

228 is very low, but you can refine some chamfers if needed,
now, the deal is to define correct smoothing groups. and UVs
then, make the hi poly model, then bake normals…

Note that while there’s nothing wrong with this way there are also other ways to generate normal maps depending on your needs. Could be worth a little research.

right

that’s the point where he decides to go in depth or to give up
